After The Deadline – Grammer and Spell Checking for WordPress
Posted by: dragonblogger // Category: bloggingI was contacted by the makers of After the Deadline last week to review their After The Deadline plug-in for WordPress which has a more comprehensive dictionary, and can do both grammar and spell checking on your blog posts while current default WordPress can only do basic spell checking.  I also saw a few plugs on twitter from CopyBlogger among others so I decided to give the product a try after sending some queries to the creator. For one the product is free for individual bloggers and they have several packages available for companies or large volume online publications.
The plug-in installs like other WordPress plug-ins, just go to After The Deadline website.
- Click on Download Link at top
- Click on WordPress
- Save the ZIP file
- Go to your WordPress Admin
- Click on Plug-ins
- Click on Add New
- Click Upload
- and Select the new Zip file
- Then activate the plug-in
You need to register an account on After The Deadline to get an API key
after you register input your API key in the After The Deadline tab

From that point on you can create a New Post and just click on the new “Check Writing” button which replaces your older spell check button in WordPress, it should have some colorization now to indicate that it is different.

Immediately after testing the plug-in you will see how valuable it is in the colored underlines it puts on your post, RED underlines for misspelled words, and green or blue underlines for grammatical errors.

You can right-click on any one of the underlined sections and be presented with options, such as correction words or add to dictionary for red lines, and grammar and even information about grammar and sentence structure type for the blue or green underscored sections.

I wanted to learn more about what “Passive Voice” and was provided with the following information after right clicking on one of the green underlined sections in the top of this post:

But you still have to use your judgement on some of the suggestions, as I didn’t agree with the After the Deadline suggestion offered over my choice of using the word indicate. I don’t always think you should simplify your choice of words.

In Review:
This is the best grammar and spell check plug-in I have found for WordPress and should be used by anyone who does blogging, I know way too many blogs that have a high ratio of misspelled words or poorly crafted sentences that could benefit from this free plug-in. One thing to note is I have not yet tested to see how many API calls I can make, I don’t know what happens if you exceed the free API calls and if you will just be rejected or prompted for an upgrade or pro license. But I highly recommend bloggers check out After The Deadline for their grammar and spell check needs.
One note: At the time of this review the product has some known issues with IE8 combined with WordPress 2.8 and the company is working to resolve those issues.

Hi Justin,
Thanks for the review. I fixed the IE8 issue last week and we’re good to go for everyone now.
