The year 2012 has been a rather bombastic year in regards to tensions between premium networks and satellite service providers.  There’s been the highly publicized kerfuffle between DirecTV and Viacom, which had cartoon icons like Spongebob walking the plank for a week, and of course the ongoing conflicts with streaming services like Netflix.  Rather than relying solely on Twitter exchanges, blog posts, or press releases – AMC is deciding to now take the viral route to share their say in the matter.  One of their most interesting moves to date is the decision to host a fan video contest entitled “Hey DISH, Where’s My AMC?”

Example of an approved Hey DISH, Where’s My AMC? contest entry.

The contest entails creating a 30-90 second video, like the one posted above, that is a parody or expresses the lengths fans of Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, Hell on Wheels, or Man Men would go to get back their dose of AMC entertainment despite DISH Network pulling the plug.  In an effort to draw in more fans, AMC is asking subscribers of any premium television service to submit entries whether they are a DISH customer or not.  While testing one’s editing and acting skills sounds amusing, what is AMC doing you ask to make the reward more enticing?

Those who win the contest either in the People’s Choice, Highest Viewed, or AMC’s Choice categories will receive cash prizes and other goodies.  AMC’s Choice winners will receive the grand prize of the contest which is $4,000, a Canon 7D Camera, feedback from AMC Senior Vice President of Production, and being shared on AMC’s social networks.  The People’s Choice winner will receive $1,000 and also be shared on AMC’s social networks if they receive the highest votes.  Lastly, the Highest Viewed winner will walk away with a $1,000 Cash Prize and all available seasons of their favorite AMC show.

Entering is simple and only requires that you fill out the form on the Participation page and provide a link to an unlisted video that follows all the rules and guidelines.  AMC will screen your video and if they find it suitable they will send you an email that will allow you to make your video public and fill in information that will appear on the Talenthouse landing page.  If you are not up to entering and are simply interested in checking out good entries, you can give mine a peek (the video above) and watch several others on the Hey DISH, Where’s My AMC playlist.  Voting for your favorites will open up on September 3, 2012 and end September 9, 2012.

I’ve been watching this thing unfold since they first started talking about it and honestly the whole thing stinks of deceit and makes me want to puke.  What AMC isn’t telling you, is that it’s not JUST the AMC channel itself that’s being pulled, but every channel that the AMC network holds (includes WE and IFC).  The reason Dish is pulling the plug is because they’re not being offered individual channels, but rather are being forced to keep the channel package, which causes them to lose money.  The other channels that AMC owns are bringing in such horrendously low viewer numbers, that despite the incredible viewer ratings of the AMC channel, Dish is losing money in the deal.  In addition to that, AMC Networks is also basically ripping them off, because they’re offering all of their content elsewhere for much lower prices than what they’ve been forcing Dish to pay.  The iTunes store is just one example, and I myself have to side with Dish, in the fact that they’re being ripped off, because people are seeing the price difference and dropping Dish Network in favor of online content.  They’ve gone around this ring with AT&T and Comcast as well already, but made deals with them that they’re unwilling to make with Dish, which is a load of crap honestly.  If I ran DN, I’d drop ‘em too.  They’re just greedy, deceptive jerks.  Not to mention that they’re gradually ruining franchises with each new episode they plan, especially The Walking Dead.

I also am not a fan of companies playing dirty by paying off their fans to do their dirty advertisement work.  Nobody should like dirty politics, and that’s exactly what this is.  Note to AMC Networks: DO YOUR OWN DIRTY WORK YOU GREEDY, ARROGANT AND WORTHLESS PIECES OF GARBAGE!!!
