Animal Intelligence Higher Than Most People Think
I have read several articles this past week in the news and online about how scientists are discovering animals are much smarter in general than history has shown. Animals once thought to be incapable of crafting tools and planning ahead for the future are now proven to have this same ability. Some animals including the Macaques are able to guestimate and sum up the number of objects in container or area equally as well with college level adults. These creatures developed this ability to quickly assess a food amount in an area for determining the length of time to stay and if the area was a good choice.
Studies have shown that human babies, monkeys and lemur’s all “think” about numbers even without any language developed at all. They are able to rudimentilly count and understand numbers of objects and sequence them. Crows and other birds have been seen bending and twisting wire to make tools that can dig food out of crevaces and hard to reach places. They can even eat less one day and stash food to save for a future emergency if they fail to forage. Elephants recognize their own reflection in the mirror putting their intellect along with dolphins, chimanzee’s and other high intellect mammals.
Anyone who is a pet owner and has seen their pet dreaming realizes that animals have thoughts and are capable of dreaming things. They may not have the entire level of comprehension as humans but their intelligence is developed to best suit their environmental needs to survive and thrive. The next time someone says “dumb” animals or “bird brain” they aren’t being cognizant to the fact that animals are much smarter than people give them credit for.
