rssreaders Blogger Baiting Game Falsifying RSS Statistics

With Entrecard market place and forums offering trade services like “20 RSS Feed Subscriptions” for 500 Entrecredits and whatnot, you have to wonder how many of the blogs that have like one hundred to three hundred RSS subscriptions are natural or artificially inflated from taking advantage of such authors as this.

With bloggers it is all about image, the more popular you appear to be, the more people will want to sign up and read your blog. Or at least that is the general appearance you try to present, this is akin to someone driving a fancy Bentley but living in a mobile trailer and just making an appearance of being popular and wealthy.

I like many bloggers am tempted to purchase some of these offers to show the Feedburner stats on my blog showing I have 100 or 200 RSS subscribers in the hopes that people will be like “Wow, a lot of people read this blog”. I myself have seen blogs over the past few months with such high stats I either think, I am really far behind these bloggers or think they are somehow artificially inflating their readership.

This is one reasons why I have chosen to remove all “statistics” and social network counters. I still think Technorati are pretty good ones since this requires true links from other blogs to affect your technorati rating, and I think some are valuable.

But ones where you can artificially pump up such as RSS Subscribers, and now there are tactics to hyper inflate Twitter followers so even these are just artificial methods of popularity. Now I am not opposed to using whatever tactics or methods you can to get more people to pay attention and stop and read or sign up for your blog. We bloggers have to do every trick in the book to stand out in a crowd, but as more and more bloggers do this we will start seeing dozens of blogs all with hundreds of RSS subscribers and know that it is artificially inflated.

The more this is done the more advertisers will continue to rely on PageRank, AlexaRank and RealRank to determine a blogs popularity and value. The blog owner themselves may lose track of artificial vs real traffic and not have an accurate estimate to how much of a genuine audience they are reaching as well.

Just one of my opinions.
