Blogging Tips – Tactics For Traffic Part 1

Posted by: dragonblogger  //  Category: blogging

There are several ways to attempt to gain traffic to your blog, but instead of focusing on external SEO, submission sites, social media networks or others, this article will instead focus on the types of articles bloggers write and their intentions.

Bloggers need to make use of two types of articles the “Current Events” also known as “What’s Popular Right Now” and then there is the slow but steady “Unique and Obscure” post styles.  In order to stay relevant and help drive immediate traffic to your site, you need to try and be very caught up on current events, blogging about the latest breaking news within hours of it breaking.  This will help you get high placements in Google search ranks at least for a very short time since you captured the popularity of something and capitalized on this early.

With the Susan Boyle from America’s Got Talent, I was able to post about it early and keyword it cleverly and for a period of 5 days I had the #2 slot on Google Search ranks and my Rock Along Productions blog had a skyrocket of 250% increase of traffic for a week from a single post placed at the right time and tagged properly.

But this tactic only captures traffic for a very short period of time, only while a current story is popular and even then only before the big sites get it keyworded so heavily that your blog keywording slides into obscurity after a short period of time.

This is where writing Unique and Obscure articles comes in, find something that has staying power like an article on a product, service or a professional or insight on a subject that you know will potentially come up for months if not years.  Write about it and keyword tag it as if you were to search for the subject yourself.  Some great idea’s are to post about other blog sites, or movies (older ones) or even your own point of view about a political position or philosophical issue.

These are the long haul posts that won’t fade into obscurity, but you will find that these come up later on rather than right away.  An example of this is back in January I wrote an article about a website that creates custom Google homepages called Shiny Search, I didn’t think much of it at the time, but this article 3 months later now holds the #3 spot on Google search if you search for “Shiny Search” for Dragonblogger.com, right under the company’s site itself.

This one article has amassed more than 3000 hits since it was created, and continues to gain at least 200 – 300 hits per week on my blog just from its Google search ranking.  I updated the post recently with additional information, to keep it even more relevant, and this post is one that needs to be updated to keep it relevant should something change with the Shinysearch company.

So remember, you need to capitalize on both “Current Events” and “Unique and Obscure” in order to build both short term traffic and long term traffic to your blog.

I brought a lot of traffic to my blog by writing back to back posts about Jon and Kate and “I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here”. Of course, I don’t mind seeing my hit counters go up, but I really enjoy regular readers and comments more. I hope some of those people came back for seconds! LOL

Yeah, I find some comments on popular stuff, I don’t mind not getting comments, as if I see people retweeting my stuff on Twitter, and I see the traffic, I know my stuff is being read, fewer and fewer people leave comments anymore, and you will find that only bloggers are really good about leaving comments, not casual readers or observers who are used to reading news.google and other news sites where they aren’t used to commenting.

That is pretty good advice for people who are interested in pure traffic to a blog for whatever reason. Working news and Google trends is will most certainly bring you lots of traffic.

The problem with that traffic is that it doesn’t convert as well as niche targeted organic traffic. At least that has been my experience.
