Dragon Blogger Review Of Chaos Theory

chaos_theory_movie_image-360x400 Dragon Blogger Review Of Chaos Theory

My wife actually picked out this movie at blockbuster as the read on the back of the box looked interesting.  The movie wasn’t as funny as I thought it was going to be, however the movie was most enjoyable and is a good romantic film that shows that any relationship can have its ups and downs but love is worth sticking it through in the end.

The movie focuses on Frank Allen played by (Ryan Reynolds) I have actually seen 2 Ryan Reynolds movies in 3 days, kind of weird, his other movie Definitely, Maybe was also a very good movie, but he plays a similar role.  His character is a narrator of the story more or less in both movies, and he plays a similar character type.

So Frank Allen is a man who creates lists for everything and is very much organized and in order, rarely taking any unplanned chances or random acts.  Though how he met and married his wife was a rather interesting story, and we learn this as we get more into the film.  The movie all starts when his wife tries to insert a chore into his daily plan and sets the clock backward 10 minutes to give him some extra time to get the chore done.  She accidentally sets the clock forward and causes him to lose 10 minutes however and his day is a complete mess.  He misses his ferry, is late to his “Time Efficiency” seminar where he is the key speaker on how to be efficient with ones time.

Things spiral down hill from here and he blunders into a situation ending up in a hotel room with a groupie, he awkwardly escapes the situation but not before his wife assumes he has been cheating on her.  This leads him to spending the night alone and almost getting into an accident with a woman in labor in her car.  He drives her to the hospital and helps her get admitted, but when the mother runs away abandoning the baby Frank is left and listed as the father.  His wife now thinks he has been having an affair, has a child with another woman, and he is left trying to explain all of this.

Just when you think things can’t get worse, they do and the rest of the film covers all of this.  He learns that he isn’t the father of his daughter, but his best friend Buddy Endrow is (played by Stuart Townsend).  So he assumes his wife had an affair on him, meanwhile she was just as shocked to learn it wasn’t Franks child, Buddy is shocked to learn he actually is a father and still loves and has loved Frank’s wife Emily (played by Susan Allen) the whole time.

The movie has one of the best endings out of this type of movie showing how true love overcomes many things and my favorite part is in the last several minutes of the film and how it all works out between the three of them.  For a movie that I had never seen advertised, not even sure it came out in theaters, this was an unexpected treat and I would give it 4 out of 5 stars in the Romantic Movie genre.

Dragon Blogger Review Of Death Race

Posted by: dragonblogger  //  Category: Movie Reviews

death-race-poster-270x400 Dragon Blogger Review Of Death Race

The movie “Death Race” with Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson, Joan Allen and Ian McShane is a loose remake of the movie “Death Race 2000″ even Roger Corman was brought in as a consultant for the remake of the movie.  The movie had some interesting trailers think like “Fortress meets The Fast and The Furious”.  There are countless movies about prisons eventually becoming privatized and corporations in order to make money pit the inmates against each other in gladiator style battles.  The Running Man is one example of such a film with Arnold Schwarzenneger.

A private prison holds a payperview type event called “Death Race” where violent inmates are pitted driving against each other with cars armed with weaponry and having defensive metal plating as well as oil, napalm and caltrops.  The premise of the game is whichever inmate wins 5 races gains his freedom and his sentence pardoned.  The shoe in for the race is a racer named “Frankenstein” so disfigured he has to wear a mask.  Frankenstein dies winning his fourth race and the prison Warden Hennessey (played by Joan Allen) can’t let the ratings slide for the show. Death Race is about an honest hard working man Jensen Ames (played by Jason Statham) who is a former racer that lost his license due to a drinking and driving incident.  He was relegated to working at some sort of plant where everyone was downsized and laid off. Who is framed and setup, thrown in prison and forced to race as “Frankenstein” to keep the ratings up.

The movie is as predictable as anything you could imagine, senseless gore, prison violence and the races are choreographed so predictably, but the movie is fun to watch. Jason Statham plays his usual character type “Silent but Strong” a man of few words but of action. He reminds me a little of Sylvestor Stallone in his older movies without the slurred accent. That isn’t bad, I actually enjoy watching him and his style in most of his films. Tyrese Gibson plays one of the more amusing characters, a vicious racer named Machine Gun Joe who is also gay. He is known for all of his passengers getting killed in each race and going through several in a single race.

The movie plays out fast, and has a satisfying ending. Watching the cars unload on each other reminds me of the game series Twisted Metal for the Playstation and helped me to enjoy watching the film further. If you like car racing scenes, machine gun fighting, prison fights, murder, gore, and a movie with a happy outcome in the end then this movie you will thoroughly enjoy. Just don’t go into the film over analyzing anything. Know it is mindless and strap yourself in and enjoy the action for what it is.

Dragon Blogger Review of Fred Clause

Posted by: dragonblogger  //  Category: Movie Reviews

Fred Clause

My family actually enjoys watching many of the new holiday and Christmas movies that come out and specifically enjoy ones with a good heart warming story as well as some that have a refreshing look and take on Christmas, Santa Clause and the whole holiday spirit.

I like Vince Vaughn and Paul Giamatti so I was looking forward to the dynamic between the two in this movie.  Going into the movie it has a unique explanation of the history of Santa Clause but don’t explain why the Saint or any family member of a Saint becomes frozen in time at the age one of their members became a saint.  This was kind of a quirky explanation in addition, for supposedly so much time elapsing it made no sense that Fred Clause himself was a down on his luck person, you would think after centuries of being alive you would have a way to navigate society.  Also that he never found someone to be with or marry in all of those centuries?

Questions and disbelief racked up but I swallowed them all and then re-analyzed the film for what it is, a holiday story.  It turns out that the story is a nice story of brothers who disagree, fight but love each other just the same and one sibling getting the spotlight and the other sibling living in the shadow of the famous brother.  I thought there were some good scenes with Vince Vaughn and John Michael Higgins who plays the elf Willie.

All in all the movie was enjoyable but not excellent, Kevin Spacey had a role that was hard to explain, how can there be a company or organization to shut down Santa Clause?  Who does he report to that has this authority?  It was quite predicatable the reasons for Kevin Spacey’s character Clyde Northcut to hate Santa Clause and these were explained by the end of the film.

This movie would be given 2 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Review of Hancock

Posted by: dragonblogger  //  Category: Movie Reviews

Hancock

I want to start off by saying this is one of the more original movies I have seen in years and it doesn’t feel like your typical superhero movie while you are watching it.  This can be good for people looking for a change, but bad for people looking for that typical good vs evil superhero action flick.  Much of this film is spent about self reflection and learning who John Hancock is and how he came to be, as well as why he is the way he is and learning deeper behind what he wants to be.

That being said this film as an amazing piece that appealed to me but left me with more questions than answers and I feel it should have had a little more explanation behind what Hancock is.  I went into this movie only seeing previews and reading some reviews, but no spoilers.  So the movie had a big shock in store for me, I won’t spoil it here in case readers haven’t seen the movie yet, but I was completely taken aback by the twist in story.

It is hard for me to talk about too much without revealing and spoiling, but I will say this.  Hancock starts off as a cocky, drunk, uncaring person of supernatural powers who just does things his way because he feels like it.  He has some sense of good as he does try to help people, but his methods are careless and he causes more harm in trying to do good.  This is similar to the way The Incredibles played it in that they caused damages, lawsuits, liabilities…etc.  In Hancock however it is done with drama and not with comedy as a main point, in fact the movie has a few funny scenes but is really a dramatic movie and the previews would have you think it is a lighter film, but is actually much heavier in emotions.

What I like most about the film is that it isn’t about another super bigger stronger villain who is against the hero, as is the case with Iron Man vs Iron Monger, Hulk vs. Bigger Mutated Hulk Like Monster…etc.  The villains in this film are all normal people without any powers.  In fact there is nobody else who has special powers in the film who is a villain at all.

No technology to hurt or penetrate the hero, the hero is invulnerable on his own, but does have a weakness that is exploited by some villains in the movie.  I can’t reveal what it is without spoiling, but it is both shocking, surprising and unfortunately not explained very well by the end of the film.  You are still left wondering how and why this occurs, and how and why Hancock is the way he is from the start and how he came to be.

That being said it was a very good film, and I particularly liked when Hancock was convinced to voluntarily stay in prison to build up his public image and how he eventually started to gain self respect and dignity and grew as a human being from his incarceration.  Will Smith did an excellent job with the character as I would expect no less from him, Justin Bateman did a great job as a PR Image person who is down on his luck and needed a big break.  Charlize Theron I thought was a bit broody and had a strange behavior portrayed in the beginning of the film, but it all made sense and in retrospect I think she played her character well.

I would give this movie 3.5 out of 5 stars, though I would still put Hellboy 2 and Iron Man as better films for 2008 in the superhero genre, this film as a dramatic film is still very good.  I actually found similarites between this film and the Nicholas Cage film “City of Angels” from quite a few years abck.

Dragon Blogger Review of Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

Posted by: dragonblogger  //  Category: Movie Reviews

Hellboy 2

First off I have to tell you I am a big fan of Ron Perlman and his portrayal of Hellboy from the first film, and a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro the director.  I loved Pan’s Labyrinth and this movies creatures and set designs remind me of his previous film in many ways.

This movie has it all and starts off fantastic with a flashback to Hellboy’s early childhood years where his father reads him a story about the war between elves, goblins and humans and how the elves had used a golden army of seventy times seventy indestructible mechanical soldiers to beat the humans back.  The elven king regretted the bloodshed and forged a pact of peace and vowed never to use the golden army again.  I have always loved the human aspect of Hellboy, he is a lover of cats, beer and has a complex where he desperately wants everyone to like him and he also likes to show off.

This humanizing aspect is what makes his character so great and the movie itself so great, and Hellboys character in many ways reminds me of Mel Gibsons character in the Lethal Weapon movies.  Brash, cocky and full of his own personality and insecurities that you really get into the character and feel for him.

I have to say I think Luke Goss did a fantastic job as prince Nuada, and portrays the emotion and conviction of a being who has felt wronged for centuries, I wasn’t necessarily for saving the humans in this film.  I thought they did a good job showing how Hellboy kept seeking approval from humans but even after saving a baby and trying to help people derided and feared him which hurts his feelings.

I also liked the new boss of the Paranormal research Johan Krauss at first he seems cocky and uncaring, but you learn a lot behind his story and how he feel’s.  His ectoplasmic form are are a really cool feature and he is of particular benefit in some of the final scenes in the movie.

Selma Blair had a much larger part in the second film and had more scenes and was more vocal, I did enjoy her finally showing her feelings for Hellboy and her reasons for brooding and being moody were explained in the film but my favorite part of her scene was when she was saving Hellboy’s life and pleaded with Death.

Speaking of that scene, the way Death was portrayed in the film was magnificent.  The makeup, artistry and disturbingly eerie appearance and personality was addicting to watch.  I literally hung on every word studied every facial feature and was very impressed.

Action packed almost from beginning to end the movie has a few scenes in between that really show the heart of the movie, most notably when Hellboy convinces Abe to have a few beer’s and talk about love and romance, and the two of them are singing together.  As mentioned the fact that Hellboy is human inside just with a different appearance and abilities is what makes this film so engaging.

In Summary I loved the film even more than the first one and am hoping that there will be a third in the future.

Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Posted by: dragonblogger  //  Category: Movie Reviews

Indiana Jones Poster

If you haven’t seen the movie yet and don’t want to spoil the surprises, then do not read this review. This is a review of what happened and was revealed in the film and my own impressions and opinions. So I do point out the “surprise” elements and this is considered a spoiler.

I just finished watching the latest installment of the Indiana Jones series with my five year old boy and I have to say it was so outlandish and unbelievable yet so much fun as well.  The movie is part tribute to the former trilogy with recurring themes, characters and even showing the arc from the first movie being uncovered in a broken crate in the warehouse at the beginning of the film.

Overall the film was very enjoyable and it held pace for my five year old to follow and enjoy with me.  The film almost played with the inconceivable especially how Indiana Jones can survive a nuclear blast merely by closing himself in a lead lined refrigerator.  To how they can survive a waterfall hundreds of feet high when the water at the bottom was so shallow the vehicle touched bottom.

If you take it as a fantasy action picture which it kind of is this film crosses into X-Files territory a little bit with the UFO / Paranormal research elements and aspects behind it all.  Shia LaBeouf plays “Mutt Williams” who is the son of Marion Ravenwood (Kallen Allen reprising her role from the original film) and Dr. Jones. The chemistry between Indiana and Mutt are very good even early on, and get better with the Dad, Son jabs once Indiana finds out Mutt is his son. Though I like Shia LeBeouf as the kind of oafish but likable character, his Mutt Williams was a little unpolished and wasn’t likable I thought in the beginning of the film. They did a good job of showing how Mutt was kind of chip off the old block toward the end of the film.

There were a few points in the film I didn’t like the main being the duel between Dr. Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchette) and Mutt from atop moving vehicles.  The computer generated sequences were so obvious it distracted heavily from the whole scene.  The Nuclear Bomb scene was also so unbelievable and originally had me worried the whole film was going to be crappy based on the sheer nonsense of thinking Indiana could survive the heat and bashing around of being thrown miles from inside a Lead refrigerator.

The film also pointed out that Indiana’s father is dead, but didn’t he drink from the Holy Grail in the third film?  In fact so did Indiana, wouldn’t this have made them immortal?  Or did they have to keep drinking from it to be immortal?

I was awed by the final scenes in the film when the returned the skull and the extra-dimensional being reformed and transported back to its own dimension.  I liked the poignant fact that the “aliens” were knowledge hunters and collectors, kind of like archaeologists and this is why they had only “spoken” to Dr. Jones and his associate Dr. Oxley (played by John Hurt).

The film ended with the marriage and the possible torch being handed over to Mutt Williams as taking over the family exploration business in a gesture of picking up his fathers hat.  I don’t think it will catch on, but this film was a nice conclusion rounding out the trilogy nicely.

So despite some nonsense and lack of believability if you take it Indiana Jones as kind of a 1950’s action hero who is untouchable, unscathable and survives against all odds, this was a very enjoyable film and did not disappoint.  At least not in my opinion, but I tend to like almost all movies and dislike very few.

Just Saw The Incredible Hulk For the First Time

Posted by: dragonblogger  //  Category: Movie Reviews

The Hulk

HULK SMASH

I must say it was a very good movie, much better than “Hulk” from a few years back.  Edward Norton does a very good job as Bruce Banner, and William Hurt plays General Ross.  This movie basically ignores the previous movie and treats it as if it never existed.  Now I did like some aspects of the previous film, such as the fact that Hulk became random sizes based on the strength of his rage transformation. This was true to the original comics, which Hulk became much more “same size” in the later comics.

During the opening credits the movie eludes to how Bruce Banner becomes the Hulk, through a series of experiments he gamma radiates himself and rages as the hulk injuring his girl Betty Ross (played by Liv Tyler) and just about everyone else at the lab and testing facility.  He is on the run, but he is also seeking for a way to cure himself of his affliction.

Hiding out in Brazil working at a soda bottling plant he manages to keep low for several years while working with a doctor from New York on ways to undo Gamma Radiation Poison.  He tries a rare herb extracting and amplifying the dosage, but alas it doesn’t have an effect.  Meanwhile during an accident at work a drop of his blood made it into a soda bottle (nasty, this is like people who find mice heads in jarred pickles).  A cameo by Stan Lee himself as the one who drinks the bottle and has an attack, this clues the Government into Bruce Banner’s location and they send in a strike force team to immobilize and capture him.  Tim Roth I must say plays some of the most wicked and sociopathic villains, his role in “Planet of the Apes” was the best role in the film and he does play just as evil and cunning a villain in this movie as well.

The apprehension fails and Bruce gets enraged and goes all Mutant on the soldiers, tossing them around like rag dolls, throwing heavy machinery and I love how they emphasize he isn’t bullet proof.  The bullets carve holes in his green skin, he just regenerates so fast they do no damage.  So he feels pain from being shot which only enrages him further.

Bruce then realizes he has to go back to the states and collect more data about his transformation and the project and this causes him to meet up with the love of his life Betty, who was trying to move on with her life but fell immediately for Banner the moment she laid eyes on him again.  Ah, I do love stories about True Love, somewhat of a sucker for these type of romantic scenario’s.  I also like the cameo by Lou Ferigno as the Security Guard at the University.

Meanwhile, Major Blonsky (Tim Roth) realizes he needs to be enhanced to catch The Hulk, so he asks the General to test the serum on himself.  He takes a low dosage at first which makes him faster, stronger and more agile.  When they next catch Bruce at the University, they unwisely engage him with guns (pointless) and then Major Blonsky has at him.  He is fast, but Hulk is too strong and he is unable to overcome that point.  These sonic weapons are brought out which temporarily incapacitate the hulk but after seeing some soldiers manhandle his girl, he is able to overcome the sonic weapons and destroy them.  The Major goads him into attacking him and The Hulk just literally kicks him so hard his body shatters against a tree.  You figure he’s dead, and in fact at the hospital the medics say his bones are pretty much crumbled like dust.  The Hulk escapes but not before he saves Betty’s life from an attack ordered by her Father (General Ross) who did not realize his daughter would be caught in the line of fire.  Hulk saves her and carries her away to safety.

However the serum did grant him regenerative powers and he asks the General for more dosage to fight Hulk again.  Meanwhile Bruce made it to the City to meet his mystery scientist awaits Bruce and Betty and they try to induce a “Hulk Attack” to try and neutralize it with an antidote.  This seems to work and Bruce reverts back into his human form and they believe that he may be cured.  Meanwhile the General is all hocked up on his 2nd dosage of juice and decides to rough everyone up.  After learning that the Scientist had cloned Bruce’s blood he demands to be enhanced just like “Hulk”.

Of course this is where the Major mutates into this distrubing looking cross between “The Hulk” and some sort of Exo-Skeletal creature.  Makes for a pretty interesting creature that goes around smashing, killing and goading the army.  Bruce who was being carried away under capture offers to assist and asks to be sent back in.  The General realizing he has no choice lets Bruce jump out of the helecopter where he falls through the ground and arises fully transformed.

One of the best battle sequences commences, equal I would say to Iron Man final battle here.  As we see The Hulk is out muscled but still retains some of Bruce Banner’s wit.  The thing I liked was the fact that even as The Hulk, Betty was able to stop him and have him show mercy to the monsterous Major, releasing him without killing him.  (They don’t explain how they subdued that monster though and keep him from escaping).

The best scene by far in the movie is when General Ross is sitting at the bar at the very end and is drinking shots, when Robert Downey Jr. shows up as Tony Stark.  He says that “They” are putting a team together and they should talk.

This is a setup for The Avengers movie, and I am so DAMN Excited to see this one coming.  Really cool to have Robert Downey do that cameo.

That is my Review, if I had to rate this movie out of 5 stars, I would give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Dragon Blogger Review of Son of Rambow

Posted by: dragonblogger  //  Category: Movie Reviews

Before I go into the movie review I want to tell you that as a kid I had a VHS Camcorder and I would go around filming amateur type films with my brother, where we would put on costumes and I was the director, screenwriter and cameraman.  My friends and brother would act in my films and we would create these elaborate stories and such.

The movie Son of Rambow really took me back to my own childhood as far as the kids making an amateur film, even if I couldn’t relate to the characters situations in their personal lives.

This was an extremely good movie and it is about two polar opposite boys who become best friends, and this friendship and bond that forms help balance the two of them out.  One boy (Lee Carter) is from a broken home barely raised by his older brother with no rules or discipline at all, he is a wild child who steals, curses, smokes and is generally hated by his schoolmates and teachers alike.

The other boy (Will Proudfoot) comes from an overly strict religious family where he isn’t allowed to have much contact with outsiders and must adhere to strict religious rules.  Meanwhile Will doesn’t feel the same way and we quickly learn his imagination and creativity take him to other places, as his bible has nearly every page colored and scribbled with elaborate scenes of adventure.

The two boys meat by accident when Will is sent into a hallway since he isn’t old enough to watch a documentary, and Lee is banished to the hallway as a punishment.  They meet and have a scuffle which leads to a fish bowl breaking and Lee offering to take the blame and the “torture” if Will will give him his watch.

From here the two boys get to know each other and start making an amateur film which originally is Lee’s idea and story, but after Will watches the movie “Rambo:  First Blood” he creates his “Son of Rambow” story and Lee buys into the story and they decide to make Will’s story.

Every moment of the film gets better and better as the boys do stupid things that boys do, take careless risks with stunts, fight, lie, steal, yet their friendship grows.  We even see how Will becomes so obsessed with the film and the outside world from his church that he starts abandoning his friend for a new crowd who wants to be a part of the film, and we see the falling out and then reconnection between the boys.

The end of the film is perfect and brings a harmonious balance to both boys and their families to some degree showing that people really shouldn’t be one extreme or the other, but should find a balance between the two.

I really enjoyed this film and it makes me want to pick up my camcorder and make some home movies with my boys this weekend.

Dragon Bloggers Review of Igor

Posted by: dragonblogger  //  Category: Movie Reviews

Igor Movie Review

My kids have been asking to see Igor for a while so we decided to take the kids to the theaters last night.  I didn’t go into the film expecting much, I saw the previews and the movie looked so-so to me.  I was pleasantly suprised by how good the film was, it was much more enjoyable than I expected and the grim morbid humor felt like I was watching a Tim Burton film such as Corpse Bride or Nightmare Before Christmas.  In particular the immortal and suicidal Scamper voiced by Steve Buscemi was probably the funniest character in the film.  Though I thought Sean Hayes was very good as the dim witted “Brian” (supposed to be Brain).

The film goes into a brief narrative explaining how Igor’s (people born with hunchbacks) are kind of like another race and they exist only to serve Evil Geniuses.  The town of Malaria (again great city name) was drowned in storm clouds after some cataclysmic event and the entire population makes a living by inventing evil creations and threatening to unleash them on the rest of the world if the world doesn’t pay to avoid their own destruction.

Enter Igor the main character of the film, voiced by John Cusak.  Igor is a genius creating inventions and having greater idea’s than his Evil Master.  All Igors are required to put on a schtick and act stupid and slur their words when addressing their masters, and Igor himself makes recommendations for parts that his Master shrugs off.

Igors greatest invention he is working on is the creation of life, a living golem creature comprised of mixed pieces of flesh.  He wants to build this creature and impress all the city folk into allowing him to be an Evil Genius.

Igors greatest invention to date was an immortal rabbit creature named Scamper, who repeatedly attempts different methods of committing suicide in an attempt to end its immortality.  This humor is very dark and twisted, but I can’t help but laugh as the bunny is found exploded, impaled and tortured to death in various scenes only to pop back to life.

The other invention Igor created is a brain in a jar with a single metallic claw.  The brain is somewhat dim-witted spelling his own name as “Brian” on the jar which is a great gag for much of the film.  Sean Hayes who does the voice of Brain is much more enjoyable in this film than he was as the goldfish in Cat in The Hat in my opinion.

There is a contest every year where every genius must create a monster and the strongest monster standing gets threatened to be unleashed on the rest of the world.  The evil genius Dr. Schadenfreude who wins the competition every year is after Igors invention this year.

Igor creates his invention only to find that she isn’t the killer that he intended her to be.  She is a loveable kind hearted monstrosity named “Eva” who wouldn’t hurt a fly.  The serious takes a variety of predictable twists and turns but I enjoyed watching every scene in the film.

I found that the film had a few twisted and dark scenes in particular the almost domestic violence type scenes between Dr. Schadenfreude and Jaclyn, I almost cringed when my four year old saw how these characters spoke and acted toward each other.  As an adult I found it humours and amusing how they were spoofing those type of “HoneyMooner’s type relationship” but I thought it a bit too vicious for little kids.

The whole fact that little kids were laughing at a creature trying to commite suicide is a little strange in itself, so if you are very sensitive to this type of morbid humor and you don’t let your kids watch PG-13 movies, then I would avoid letting little ones watch this movie.

For those who have a funny bone and that kind of stuff doesn’t get to you, this film was definitely worth seeing.

Dragon Bloggers Review of The Forbidden Kingdom

Posted by: dragonblogger  //  Category: Movie Reviews

The Forbidden Kingdom

Director Rob Minkoff brings us this action packed movie which stars both Jackie Chan and Jet Li together. I have to say I saw this movie enjoyed it immensely. It has all of the elements you like in a movie of this genre. Young Apprentice who knows know Kung-Fu until he is taught by a master, the drunken master who is reluctant to take on a student, the unknown opponent who turns into one of their greatest allies, magical evil immortals, a monkey king who is imprisoned in stone waiting to be released. The story is fun, simple and the action and choreography are entertaining. My only qualm about the film is the film is particular mean and violent in the beginning with the teenager Jason Tripitikas (played by Michael Angarano) who is attacked by hooligans who are particularly violent, especially when brandishing a gun and shooting the old shop owner, and chasing the boy threatening to shoot him. This is a little too hostile for a kung-fu film, and fantasy violence with kung-fu throwing opponents into walls, and arrows even though people die, the menace and vulgarity of the thugs in opening and ending scenes seemed a little out of place in the film. This movie would have been ideal for younger kung-fu fans ages 10+ if it wasn’t for a couple of overly violent scenes.

That being said that was my only negative about the film, Jackie Chan was enjoyable as the self proclaimed Immortal, who helps the boy return the magical staff to the Monkey King. The Silent Monk and the Monkey King both played by Jet Li, who does a great job and is good to see as a good guy as most movies I have seen him recently he is the villain. The English dubbing and voice work is a little bad, I think Jet Li and Jackie Chan were using their own English voices for the film, I am almost sure of it but couldn’t find out for certain.

The movie certainly is not meant to be taken seriously like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or House of Flying Daggers, which is what made it enjoyable. Jackie Chan is getting to be too old for martial arts movies and Jet Li is moving up there in age as well. They still shine for a little while longer, but Jackie Chan was much more agile and choreographed in such films as “Armor of the Gods” and “The Drunken Master”.

If you are a Jackie Chan fan, Jet Li Fan, or a fan of Kung-Fu or Karate movies, this is definitely worth a rent.
