The robotics industry is still lagging in the area’s of home consumer robotics in my opinion. The Roomba and other vacuum or house cleaning robots were just the first step and were more like gimmicks than actually useful products as they do have limitations. What we really need is to develop intelligent and efficient robots that can perform basic household chores that free up humans to do more productive things.

Laundry is a no brainer, no reason humans should have to keep doing laundry in their own home. Robots will wash, clean, sort and fold laundry and put it away for you. The same holds true for cleaning dishes, carpets, floors, and any other basic household chore. I figure we would need a bipedal robot similar to a 3-CPO type device that was able to manipulate objects and had range of motion to perform most tasks.

It’s not that humans are becoming lazier, time is actually being spent being more productive in other ways. For example, if you are working a job where you are being paid per hour, you are losing money for each hour it costs you to do the chores around your house. This is time that could be spent with your children, relaxing, or doing something else. People shouldn’t have to work a full time job only to have to spend five hours working more at home.

So I am for cheap, household maid like robots, that you can just purchase, train and they will take care of the household chores on your behalf. Maybe we will see one within a decent price range in the next decade if we are lucky.
