I wanted to say I am relatively new to blogging and one thing I have noticed in the past 60 days of me starting my blogging venture that there are some wonderful people in the blogging community.  Many of you know each other and are connected to each other, recognize each other’s blog’s and avatars and treat each other with respect.  I am really impressed and awed by this kind of online society of people who share thoughts, opinions, reviews and commentary about everything imaginable.  I really didn’t start delving into blogs until the last three months, I started by finding blogs that I read occasionally as articles on Digg or from news.google.com or a result of a google search for a product or service.  But now that I have started a blog, and joined Socialspark, I am looking at more and more people’s blogs and see it is kind of like a living network.  I can’t believe there is even a Blog Expo in Las Vegas in September, who would have known.  I won’t be attending this year, but if I become a successful blogger over the next year like some of you, I will probably attend in future years.

I really like the idea of blogging, as someone who has loved to write and never found a medium for the past eighteen years, I mostly wrote fiction stories, poems, technical documents for work and I played Dungeons and Dragons.  I would create elaborite stories, quests and details on entire worlds.  This was all an outlet to write, I have always loved writing since I was a teenager, I took creative writing in high school. I never developed it and instead went into computers and technology, not a bad choice.  Many feel I am gifted and are very technically adept.  I have a gift to learn new products and applications quickly and specialize currently in identity and access management software, particularly Computer Associates SiteMinder Web Access Manager.

I don’t get to play dungeons and dragons much anymore, due to having a family and not having very many people in person I hang out with, so blogging is a really good outlet for my creative writing, as well as for me to share my reviews and opinions and thoughts.  It is kind of like an online diary for some.  My original purpose in starting a blog was to make a side income, we are all cash strapped in these hard times, and I could use a little second income.  I don’t have the time to take away from my family and physically work nights and weekends, so I decided to do something I can do.  My kids are asleep, and instead of leaving the house I can try to make money by blogging after I tuck my kids into bed.

So far my blog is very new, not even twenty days old yet, but it is already more successful than my first blog was “Wanderer Thoughts” was my original blog.  I have found some very helpful blogger’s who have shared some information with me on what they use, and how they got started.  These people didn’t have to share their tips and hard work with anyone, but they voluntarily chose to be kind and help me get started and figure out how to start growing my readership and eventually bring in advertisers (I hope).

This is a shout out to all of my blogger friends, I have added most of them to my blogroll, and one I add to my blogroll is someone I value and respect.  Be sure to check them out and give them an Entrecard Drop if you like their site.  I know I will be paying respect to all the blogger’s out there who came before me and anytime anyone needs help with their blog, or information you can ask me and I will always give advice on whatever I know.  Knowledge is power, and if you have the gift of writing, the time, the devotion to build a readership and look for sponsor’s, then you have my respect.

I could only hope oneday to be as popular as some of the giants, imagine if you could make a full time income by blogging?  Or at least a sizable income that can be put away and saved for retirement or the future.  I have equal respect for journalism and journalists too, especially reports who go to the front lines to report a story.

One advice and tip for all bloggers, I don’t know if you consider my posts “Quality” posts, but I have read some blogs out there and have advice for some of the blogs.

1)  We all want to get paid by sponsor’s and advertisers, but have a clearly defined “Blog” area with your blog information, if you spew ads all over your site: top, bottom, left and right, with a small writing area in the middle it distracts badly from reading the post.

2)  Write more details when you review something, if you read an article don’t just repost the article add some character write your own version and interpretation of the article with snippets of the original article.  Instead of just saying “I liked the movie” describe what you liked, didn’t like and give specifics but not spoilers for those who haven’t seen it.

3)  Keep your social networking ads at the top of your blog so they are seen first thing, I don’t want to scroll through a whole page to find someone’s Entrecard button, keep it clear and visible.

4)  Make your archives close to the top as well, or at least in an area very easy to find.

5)  I often try to find more about the blogger, or contact the blogger to find some blogs have no “about me” pages or “contact me” links.  Please make a contact me button or link clearly visible, and or an about me page that has an embedded “contact me” link.

6)  Again, we all are trying to make money but try to pick and choose what you accept for payment.  I saw many technical blogs, sports blogs…etc having advertisements and posts about stuff nothing even remotely related to their category.  A men’s blog that has a post about a company that collects women’s menstrual blood for stem cell collection is very out of place and a poor choice of advertising in my opinion.

7)  Keep your blog clean and professional, unless you are an adult content website, do not have any adult content advertisements.  I see a blog with this kind of stuff and I lose respect and immediate credibility for the blog.  If you are an adult content blog thats fine, but try to keep your ad content related to the rating of your blog.

There, those are my blog opinions and tips.  Ironic that I have only started Dragon Blogger less than two weeks ago and already have advice and feedback for blogs.  So let me know, should I keep my trap shut, or do you think this is good common sense type advice?
