Digital Pack Rat Syndrome
You know what a pack rat is right, it is a term for human beings who hoard everything and fill up their houses with what we would consider junk. Newspapers, photo’s, boxes, cans, literally everything you can keep and collect they do until they barely have a place carved out to sit, sleep and eat. Well Digital Pack Rat Syndrome is going to be the next big thing in the technology area, with Western Digital releasing a 2 Terabyte Hard drive for under $300, this drive is now the largest capacity single drive in existence and the problem is. Do we need that much space?
This means nobody will ever have a need to “cleanup” their My Documents, Photo’s, Music, Movies, Games, Applications…etc Your windows will grow more and more bogged down with stuff and eventually you will have so many data files you won’t be able to find anything (well Google Desktop and other type applications help in that area). Seriously, I did fill up my 160GB hard drive and really miss my 200GB one that died on my a few months ago.
2 Terabytes and I probably wouldn’t need another drive for at least a few years, I wouldn’t have to burn all my stuff to DVD to back it up and archive it, I could just leave it all sitting on my hard drive. I would never need to scour and clean out old files, uninstall stuff I wasn’t using. But is this healthy, is digital pack ratting a healthy way to live? Imagine having several years worth of files, software and such sitting untouched.
- A) you will forget what you have and likely never remember where it is, or if you did you won’t care.
- B) by the time you realize you had a piece of software sitting somewhere installed, or archived, it is 9 versions older than the most current.
- C) The fifty thousand photo’s you have give you no reason to go back and delete all the blurry worthless shots, you just archive and keep everything, and with most photo’s named DSCxxxx or IMGxxx you have no idea what you took where, and have to spend hours just to find the one photo you do remember.
- D) Music is a little easier, Winamp does a great job of finding stuff by title, artist, album…etc.. But it has gotten so bad, that I don’t even know what to look for, I have more than 30,000 songs and I don’t even remember 1/2 the stuff I have. So I wouldn’t even know to search for it anymore.
Still, I have to get me one of these giant drives in the future, since I am using an external 160GB hard drive, an internal 160GB hard drive and 2 9 GB older ATA hard drives now, I would like to consolidate and keep it all in one place. The problem now is Blu-Ray burning drives are still too expensive, how can I backup 100gb of data, I don’t want to waste 25 DVD’s to do it.
