My family actually enjoys watching many of the new holiday and Christmas movies that come out and specifically enjoy ones with a good heart warming story as well as some that have a refreshing look and take on Christmas, Santa Clause and the whole holiday spirit.
I like Vince Vaughn and Paul Giamatti so I was looking forward to the dynamic between the two in this movie. Going into the movie it has a unique explanation of the history of Santa Clause but don’t explain why the Saint or any family member of a Saint becomes frozen in time at the age one of their members became a saint. This was kind of a quirky explanation in addition, for supposedly so much time elapsing it made no sense that Fred Clause himself was a down on his luck person, you would think after centuries of being alive you would have a way to navigate society. Also that he never found someone to be with or marry in all of those centuries?
Questions and disbelief racked up but I swallowed them all and then re-analyzed the film for what it is, a holiday story. It turns out that the story is a nice story of brothers who disagree, fight but love each other just the same and one sibling getting the spotlight and the other sibling living in the shadow of the famous brother. I thought there were some good scenes with Vince Vaughn and John Michael Higgins who plays the elf Willie.
All in all the movie was enjoyable but not excellent, Kevin Spacey had a role that was hard to explain, how can there be a company or organization to shut down Santa Clause? Who does he report to that has this authority? It was quite predicatable the reasons for Kevin Spacey’s character Clyde Northcut to hate Santa Clause and these were explained by the end of the film.
This movie would be given 2 1/2 out of 5 stars.
