Dragon Blogger Review of Couples Retreat

couples retreat

Last weekend my wife and I had Grandma watch the kids and we had a good old fashioned date night which included dinner and a movie. We saw the movie Couples Retreat and there were many things to like about the film. First off Vince Vaughn is always funny as his wise cracking narcissistic sense of humor and having Jon Favreau as one of his best friends going through his own crisis lead to some funny frantic scenes in the film.

The premise of the movie is simple, four couples in order to save money go away on a retreat however the couple who organized the retreat really wanted to try and save their marriage and misled their friends into attending, subjecting them to therapy which leads to some funny moments as some couples refuse to believe they have problems, while others just don’t care anymore. The movie would actually have been sad had it not been for the honest connection building in the end which leads to the simple truth that no relationship is perfect and it takes work and effort to make things work.

As dysfunctional as each couple is, they all find themselves and what their partner means to them and I particularly thought the puns between Shane played by Faizon Love and Trudy played by Kali Hawk were funny in their lampooning of older men and younger women. Jon Favreau played a sleazy slime bag of a character though and provides some of the more comedic and sometimes grotesque scenes in the movie.

Overall the movie was a PG-13 movie and it didn’t cross any boundaries, it kept it relatively light and was enjoyable. I still think it could have been funnier, some of the gags could have been done better but overall we both enjoyed the film.

I would give the movie 3 out of 5 stars.

Great review! I’m a big fan of Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau. Your description of Vince’s “narcissistic humor” hit the mark. Perfect! I want to rent this movie now.

Wow, a PG-13 rating for a movie with such a story line. Remarkable, I know a bunch of romantic comedies where they cross the line in such a manner they are far ahead of the line itself :( Your review entices me to watch this with family. Its been quite long time that me and kids hit the screens together for a movie. Thanks!
