Movie Review: Dragon Hunters (2008)
I love a good CGI movie and I have seen many of them over the years. Lately many children’s CGI movies have been boring carbon copies trying to capitalize on the success of Shrek, or Pixar films with little real innovation or imagination on their own. Dragon Hunters is different, here is a movie that is filled with a unique visual world that is so different from any other film you have seen.
The world itself feels a little like Super Mario Galaxy where floating pieces of planet all with their own center of gravity seem to drift in air. It almost is as if the planet itself is made up of floating islands and showing the grassy plains, to the vicious and dangerous forests you can see the artists and animators clearly made use of their imagination with this film.
The story itself is not overly original, it is about a vast creature called “The World Gobbler” that arises every twenty years or and attempts to swallow the world. The king in the film dispatches knights to deal with the beast, but the latest round of knights has not returned. I watched the film in English with Forest Whitaker as the voice of Lian-Chu the soft and gentle muscle man who with his side kick Gwizdo bill themselves as Dragon Hunters and try to make money by dispatching creatures who threaten and disturb the people.
The english dialogue is a little weak, maybe the original french language of the film is better, but the creative story and visuals more than make up for the weak dialogue. From the slug like creature in the early part of the film, to the lightning dragons to the venomous forest, the film is filled with exciting action moments. My five and two year old kids loved the film and we all watched it several times in the same weekend, including myself because I thought the film was just so original and artistically beautiful I had to see it again.
Bottom line, if you are a fan of CGI animation films, fantasy films like Willow, LOTR and such, then this is a must see movie for you. It is for people of all ages and highly recommended.

Although I'm a bit late, I think I'm still lucky enough to read this review on Dragon Hunter. First time to your blog and the picture attracted me. I've never came across this movie. Do you know where can I get it now? It looks really interesting and it is true I'm quite tired watching similar versions of shrek and other popular animation.
