Dragon Blogger Review of Heroes Season 4 Redemption – Episodes 1 and 2

This review includes opinions on what happened in the show and it is considered spoilers if you haven’t seen the episode. If you have watched the show already, or just want to read synopsis, then read away and leave me some feedback.
In my honest opinion I think the show opened up very strongly this Season by breaking away from the “end of the world” stuff and showing what the show is all about which is people with abilities and how they fit into our normal society. I think it was perfect how Peter went back into the business of helping people and used his abilities (gained from Mohinder) to better serve him as a paramedic, only to acquire the ability to be incredibly fast from the knife wielding carnival man.
Hiro and Ando opening up a Dial a Hero was brilliant and for their first call to be a girl needing a cat rescued reminded me of the opening scene of The Incredibles a little bit. The show only eludes to Hiro having some sort of problem with his brain, maybe a tumor or growth that is caused by either is use of powers, or by being charged by baby Matt Parkman. However, he feels like he has regained a sense of purpose by helping undo a mistake and bringing happiness to Ando’s life with his sister.
We all knew that no good could come from Matt Parkman reprogramming Sylar to assume Nathan Petrelli’s identity, and we see this start to unravel in the first two episodes. What we didn’t expect was a portion of Sylar’s consciousness transfer to Matt’s own mind where Sylar starts twisting him and getting inside his head (no pun intended).
We learn in this season that there is a carnival lead by a man named Samuel who has a strange power of some sort of telekinesis. He can ink tattoo’s and move the ink to make shapes, but can also move dirt as he was able to cover the grave of a fallen comrade by moving the dirt and earth itself. The carnival itself appears to have a collection of Heroes that work for it (possibly against their will) and the person who was killed, it would appear Danko was the cause, had teleportation or time travel ability. This causes Samuel to seek out a replacement person and he targets Hiro Nakamura.
By the end of the 2nd episode we learn he is also looking to go after Claire, Peter and Sylar. There is a tattoo girl who is able to somehow divine the names of whomever Samuel tattoo’s on her back, though little else is known about her yet. There is an elderly man on oxygen who has the ability to send other people through time, and he sends Samuel back in the past 14 years to meet Hiro and steer his course.
Noah meanwhile is alone and with ex-wife moved on with somebody else, Claire in college he really can’t find a purpose anymore. He unfortunately gets caught between the Carnival crew and Danko only to find himself nearly killed by one of the Carnival employee’s who has the speed of Daphne. Peter though managed to absorb his power and uses those abilities to help save people even faster, he even saved Noah’s life. Now Noah seems to find his only comfort in Tracy Strauss who nearly killed him but instead is trying to find a path to redemption as they all are.
Claire having started college finds that her roommate apparently commited suicide, but a new friend named Gretchen seems a bit more than she lets on, almost dark and morbid she surely seems to have some sort of Single White Female complex with Claire.
I thought NBC Heroes Season 4 opened to a great start though I think when Hiro altered time and fixed Ando’s path with his sister, this would have rewritten too much of the past few years that it may have altered Ando even coming with Hiro or them ending up where they were. I don’t like time manipulation stories, there are always too many gaps and loose ends they had better keep it to a minimum or risk altering too much and opening the show to criticism. Meanwhile the Carnival and crew seem like an interesting bunch, clearly villains with a purpose to add heroes with abilities to their crew, but to what end?
Hiro is still my favorite character, his noble spirit and child like altruism are one of the most appealing qualities he has. Peter has seemed to earned some redemption as well. I was very pleased with the opening 2 episodes and am looking forward to seeing what comes next on Heroes Season 4: Redemption.
What are my readers thoughts and opinions, fellow Heroes fans or haters? Do you think the Season is off to a weak or good start?

I was flipping back and forth between House and Heroes but I wa watching more of house then Heroes. It is too bad they can’t be on different days and they both had the same time slots also. Greg Ellison

Don’t know, man…I was almost…dare I say…bored?
The carnival characters intrigued me, and seeing Tracy bent on revenge was interesting, but all the rest – Hiro – Peter – Claire (except for the very start) – sort of feels like re-runs.
Maybe it’s just me.

Maybe your so used to the giant schemes and end of the world plots, that individual character points are a little boring. I think they are pacing it fairly well, I think one of the problems with previous seasons was too much happening too quickly. I don’t think it will stay tame for long.

I thought the Season started off strongly as well, all the individuals storylines seemed a lot more calm then before when they were trying to fight off the world ending right away.
I like how they are working the Nathan/Sylar situation with his assortment of powers. It seems plausable that the first person he would call is Peter maybe he thinks his power is developing the way Peter’s did originally.
The Parkman and Sylar scenes were my favorite ones this week, having Sylar bait Parkman into using his power was highly entertaining.
I was surprised to find that I enjoyed Noah’s interaction with Tracy. Also Peter devoting himself to saving people was interesting, I’m curious to see how they’ll get him back to connecting with people again.
Claire’s scenes were my least favorite but it looks like the carnival is coming after her, Peter and Sylar so that should make her scenes more enjoyable for me at least. She’s always more interesting to me when she’s got either Sylar to deal with or is interacting with Peter.
Lastly the carnival guys seem like an interesting bunch, especially Samuel. He’s got charisma and some sort of plan to get his hands on seemingly the most powerful of the heroes, I can’t wait to see what his endgame is. Also whats with the compass, they want that thing really bad.

Is it me or am i really glad Mohinder wasnt in any of these episodes.
I like the pace of the story, and i am interested in seeing where the plot will end up, praying that its not more of the same.
I for one am glad that they are focusing on Peter, and hope that his arc in the story will restore his power to what it was in the begining of this series.
And i am glad that Samuel pushed Hiro to change some part of the past even if it was a little thing, am wondering it this will have to do with peters arc as well.
Ray Park ftw, good to actually see him play something that you can see his face.

I have to agree with some of the others that the carnival plot is intriguing but I must say that the majority of the episode was boring. Minus the Sylar/ Parkman scenes; those were hilarious.
What is the deal with the compass? I was asking this question a good portion of the show. It seems like the compasses are sort of like a carnival club past it seemed like everyone has one.
I really wish they would just find away to get rid of Claire for a while she is my least favorite character. I mean really how many times do we have to save the cheerleader. Geez!

I agree about the Claire scenes being the weakest, but Gretchen is interesting and am curious to see how her character plays out.

I was half-watching the episode because I was doing homework, but from what I saw it was pretty good. I love the sylar/parkman scenes. Especially, the “My name is Sylar and I have been looking for my body for 6 months. Have you seen it?”
Overall, a good start. Let’s hope they make it more like Season 1.

I also really liked the Slyer/Parkman scenes! I love how Parkman referred to not using his powers as kicking the habit!
The two characters that are really grabbing my eye so far are Samuel and Gretchen. I think Gretchen is more than what she seems, but it’s still pretty early to tell… at the same time, aside from Noah, Claire really lacks anyone permanent in her life (and even Noah isn’t around much) so I wonder how long Gretchen will be around if she is indeed only a minor character. That is one of the reasons why i think she has an ability of some sort. Her being there seems too meaningful. Have to wait and see I guess.
Samuel though… I’m still trying to wrap my head around his intent. I want to think he has some sort of… divine cause for lack of a better word… but he reminds me of Linderman… only cooler.
Man, I love the fact that Peter was out there saving lives. That is so what I would be doing. It just seems like the right thing to do.
I hope Hiro doesn’t randomly go through time changing every little flub that might have screwed something up lol. He’s so cute though haha! I love how excited he got that everything worked out for Ando and his sister. I laughed hard though when he stated that he was going to go fix things, such an extreme way to act.. going from never ever changing time to changing all the bad things. That could be bad though… Some of those accidents might have caused some good things to happen. I wonder if Samuel anticipates Hiro taking so long coming back to him.

The majority of the episode was boring and lacked any direction so I was kinda disappointed. The carnival crew was the only thing that was interesting. Aside from that Sylar and Parkman’s scenes were pretty good and I really want Sylar to take center stage soon. He is too good and complex a character to be kept waiting in the fringes. I really wish they have less of Claire on the show, have had enough of the cheerleader.
Heroes never feels like the same serial every season with the new plot lines often happening as if the writers forgot about the things that happened in the past. But still I watch it hoping that it will regain its lost glory of Season 1.

I as well keep expecting and waiting for it to shine, it had some brief moments, like when Hiro and Ando started the Dial a Hero, and their first client was a girl and his cat. Felt very 1st Season Hiro.

1st of all that was a very nice review dragonblogger.
I agree with you about the very powerfull season start and i like Peter using his abilities to save lifes, only i would prefer Peter had his old ability back so he can use more powers. He was the best like that.
I loved the carnival people and samuel affcourse they are this season vilans i guess and they very cool.
I hate the thing that the wrighters did in season 3 final with parkman making sylar think that he is Nathan, i think that it would be better toput aout the sylar character from the series couse he is like old news, espesially now that we have the new vilans (carnaval people). And i liked nathan carachter and know it seems he has to go
Hiro is back to time Great!!!
Oh and that Gretchen girl yes i agree with all the people above she defenetly has some kind of ability can whait to chek it aout..
Well i gues this season will be great at total.

Thanks for your kind words, I do agree that they left loop open in Season 3, like Claire’s blood did regenerate Noah when he died, why couldn’t they just heal Nathan? What they did surely was to have consequences, but it makes for a very enjoyable Season 4 in either case.

I skipped half of last season and only came back near the end when I’d heard that they’d jettisoned the current writing staff and brought back the head writer from the first season, which I thought had some stellar moments.
This season’s premiere was garbage, and I won’t be watching anymore. Sylar is like fine wine – he should be brought out once in a while to be sipped and savored and then put back in the wine cellar. But it seems the writers are addicted to his use.
I would rather they’d introduced a new meta-villian, one that over the course of the season the Heroes struggle to overcome until they are forced to re-awaken Sylar, as he is the only one capable of defeating this new villian. That would have introduced moral confusion and saved Sylar for crescendo at the end of the season. Instead we get this cliched Sylar in Parkman’s head.
And speaking of cliched… a carnival of “freaks”? C’mon. Insulting.
Time travel has all sorts of philosophical angles of fate vs. determinism, yet the writers amateurly fumble this power constantly.
Terrible. I predict it’ll be gone at the end of this season.

Thanks for your honest feedback, I think the show is unlikely to survive another season, but think it started off fairly well. I do agree Sylar can be overused, and think the meta villain thing was already done with Arthur Petrelli last Season.

I agree with Marko – I think the show currently leaves a lot to be desired. I used to watch every episode but the quality just isnt there any more in my opinion.

Everyone talks about Season 1 as being the best. That’s because season 1 had two things this season does not have: 1. A new enemy/threat 2. An unknown avenue to resolution.
Sylar should have been killed off last season, or the season before, or heck, at the end of season 1 would have worked. Now we’ve got the same old villian, and the same people are going to fight the same battles over again. Plus pile on a steaming pile of “psychological damage” because apparently our heroes are “real people too”. It’s the stuff of daytime TV.
The Sylar/Parkman interaction has been good so far. The carnival seems week, and as soon as the real Sylar finds them, they’re all goners; they’ll never make it to the end of the season.
It feels like the show has been canceled already. Like the writers know this is the end, so they’re “doing what they always wanted to do”, sort of like the last hurrah.
In summary: The show needs a good villian, not Sylar (and the carnies don’t stand a chance). Lose the “heroes burden” bull, daytime TV pulls amateur crap like that. People like optimism, and pursuit of better things (doesn’t get any better than saving the world, but that’s been done), and complicated decisions (everyone remember ‘future’ Peter, and ‘future’ Hiro from Season 2?).
