I like many viewers was expecting something more dramatic and relevant to the current plot on Heroes Season 3 with the episode 1961, the episode promised to show something creepy and great, but did regurgitate the “thought you were dead” plot which has been recycled a dozen times on so many other shows.

Instead the episode was important for another reason in that it sets the stage for Volume 5 which will start this fall. With only two episodes left on Heroes they needed to start looking to clue in viewers as to what is to come in the future. By showing the family attempting to reunite with the intention to form a new Company “Family” to help keep special people under the radar, it shows where the characters are headed and this may mean the most fun part of the show in finding and uncovering people with new abilities.

It also set the stage for Angela’s sister to play a part in a future episode as possibly a villain, a powerful one able to control storms. Once again Heroes borrows from Xmen showing Sylar to now play a Mystique like role in impersonating a Senator for political gain, and Alice Shaw having powers very similar to Storm.

I did enjoy the flashbacks seeing Charles, Linderman and Arthur as teenagers though this background seems to deviate a little bit from the early comic books on NBC.com which show Mr. Linderman in the Vietnam war and meeting and working for the company after. They probably could explain how it all fits, but it seemed to deviate a little in my opinion.

The best thing I can say about this episode is Cristine Rose is a very talented actress in her ability to play the complex character Angela Petrelli, she can convey the emotion of guilt, regret and conviction of her actions so well. Her character over the past three seasons was shown full of lies, secrets, remorse, borderline cruelty, yet is able to show fear, sensitivity, hopelessness and guilt. She plays the role as well as Zachary Quinto plays the role of Sylar and these are two of the best actors in the show as far as I am concerned.

In summary though this episode did little to further the plot of Fugitives and instead setup the plot and direction of Volume 5. Although not very original, it was good to see Sylar and Danko maximizing their ability to portray any person and mislead people even further. I like how clever and intelligent they are as villains and they do everything they can to maximize what they have at their disposal.

For the next episode titled “I Am Sylar” I predict Sylar who is near invulnerable now has only two people who can neutralize him, The Haitian who we haven’t seen in a while and Matt Parkman Jr. who probably will cry and disable Sylar’s powers in the next episode. I don’t see Sylar getting killed but I think he will escape or make a deal to get out it again. His character is just too much a fan favorite to write off of the show, my guess is Sylar won’t be cut from the show unless Zachary Quinto is ready to quit Heroes and go onto movies full time or take another show.

One other note:

I thought it funny to see Ravi Kapoor play a young Chandra Suresh back in 1961 as Ravi played “Bug” on Tim Kring’s other show Crossing Jordan for several years prior to Heroes. I always find it amusing when directors and producers work with people from their previous works and integrate them into their current projects.

Also was it just me or did you also notice how Angela told about stealing socks to her sister and I am almost positive I recall that she was busted in the very first episode of Season 1 for shoplifting socks.  This was actually a very nice tie in to that shoplifting thing which everyone thought she did for attention after Arthur’s death.

This is Dragon Bloggers review and thoughts, let me know how you feel about the episode and what your theories are for the final two episodes and Volume 5.
