My family likes to watch independent films all the time which show true originality and storytelling that you don’t usually find in Hollywood blockbusters. The Fall is one of those movies that is just stunning, original and is a film that just stands out and leaves a lasting impression.
The backdrop for the story is actually fairly dark being about a stuntman who is crippled and in a hospital tells a fellow patient who is a little girl named Alexandria (played by Catinca Untaru) a fantastical story with five heroes. Without spoiling the movie the story mixes fantasy elements with subtle cues and takes on characters from the characters own lives.
The movie has a feel of Bed Time Stories mixed with A Little Princess but throw a Pan’s Labyrinth type of tone into it. It has some funny moments, some sad moments and some truly dark moments toward the end of the film. You can see by the end of the film why it could never have been a Hollywood blockbuster as the whole premise of the film is too dark for a normal mainstream audience.
The Fall is a fantastic film and highly recommended for anyone who likes fantasy tales, or tales of human hardship, this is one of those films that few people would rent at their local blockbuster, but those who do realize they watches something much better than the ordinary.
Dragon Blogger gives this film 4.5 out of 5 stars.
