Dragon Bloggers Review of Igor
My kids have been asking to see Igor for a while so we decided to take the kids to the theaters last night. I didn’t go into the film expecting much, I saw the previews and the movie looked so-so to me. I was pleasantly suprised by how good the film was, it was much more enjoyable than I expected and the grim morbid humor felt like I was watching a Tim Burton film such as Corpse Bride or Nightmare Before Christmas. In particular the immortal and suicidal Scamper voiced by Steve Buscemi was probably the funniest character in the film. Though I thought Sean Hayes was very good as the dim witted “Brian” (supposed to be Brain).
The film goes into a brief narrative explaining how Igor’s (people born with hunchbacks) are kind of like another race and they exist only to serve Evil Geniuses. The town of Malaria (again great city name) was drowned in storm clouds after some cataclysmic event and the entire population makes a living by inventing evil creations and threatening to unleash them on the rest of the world if the world doesn’t pay to avoid their own destruction.
Enter Igor the main character of the film, voiced by John Cusak. Igor is a genius creating inventions and having greater idea’s than his Evil Master. All Igors are required to put on a schtick and act stupid and slur their words when addressing their masters, and Igor himself makes recommendations for parts that his Master shrugs off.
Igors greatest invention he is working on is the creation of life, a living golem creature comprised of mixed pieces of flesh. He wants to build this creature and impress all the city folk into allowing him to be an Evil Genius.
Igors greatest invention to date was an immortal rabbit creature named Scamper, who repeatedly attempts different methods of committing suicide in an attempt to end its immortality. This humor is very dark and twisted, but I can’t help but laugh as the bunny is found exploded, impaled and tortured to death in various scenes only to pop back to life.
The other invention Igor created is a brain in a jar with a single metallic claw. The brain is somewhat dim-witted spelling his own name as “Brian” on the jar which is a great gag for much of the film. Sean Hayes who does the voice of Brain is much more enjoyable in this film than he was as the goldfish in Cat in The Hat in my opinion.
There is a contest every year where every genius must create a monster and the strongest monster standing gets threatened to be unleashed on the rest of the world. The evil genius Dr. Schadenfreude who wins the competition every year is after Igors invention this year.
Igor creates his invention only to find that she isn’t the killer that he intended her to be. She is a loveable kind hearted monstrosity named “Eva” who wouldn’t hurt a fly. The serious takes a variety of predictable twists and turns but I enjoyed watching every scene in the film.
I found that the film had a few twisted and dark scenes in particular the almost domestic violence type scenes between Dr. Schadenfreude and Jaclyn, I almost cringed when my four year old saw how these characters spoke and acted toward each other. As an adult I found it humours and amusing how they were spoofing those type of “HoneyMooner’s type relationship” but I thought it a bit too vicious for little kids.
The whole fact that little kids were laughing at a creature trying to commite suicide is a little strange in itself, so if you are very sensitive to this type of morbid humor and you don’t let your kids watch PG-13 movies, then I would avoid letting little ones watch this movie.
For those who have a funny bone and that kind of stuff doesn’t get to you, this film was definitely worth seeing.
