I fine tuned my Television Show watching to a handful of shows each week, I know there are probably plenty of good shows I am missing but I just don’t have the time to watch everything.  I tailor my TV watching to shows that both my wife and I enjoy, we don’t like to spend the few evening hours we have alone together apart, so instead of watching TV alone we make it a couples thing and we mutually watch something together.  The below list is my top ten shows that I watch in the past few years.  I don’t pay for premium stations so I have no HBO, Showtime, Cinemax or other movie channels, all of my shows are restricted to Network television or Basic Cable in my top 10.

Show Name

Network

Summary

The Closer

TNT

This show stars Kyra Sedgwych as a deputy chief of police of priority homicide.  This is one of the best crime drama’s on TV and her performance is uncanny as she interrogates suspects and resolves cases.  This show has only gotten better in the latest season.

Raising the Bar

TNT

This show started last season and is one of the best legal drama’s on Television, starring Mark Paul Gosselar as public defender, this show demonstrates the inner workings between Prosecutors, Judges and Public Defenders as they make deals, and Try cases.    This show doesn’t end happily for all cases and defendants and deals with some very legitimate and heavy political topics in some episodes.   This show is a must watch if you like legal drama’s in my opinion.

Monk

USA

If you are a Monk fan like myself, you know that Monk is in its final season this year.  This show was a fresh blend of originality as Tony Shalhoub played a unique private detective whose uncanny gift of deduction was an asset to the police and people who hired him.  What made the show great was his almost too many to mention compulsions, phobia’s and disorders which impeded his social life and ability to navigate in society, yet was key to his gift.

Psych

USA

Another detective type show but this one much more lampoon style and funny, James Roday plays Shawn, who has an incredibly honed gift of observation from years of being “trained” that way by his father.  Instead of turning to legitimate work he puts his talents to use prentending to be a psychic and fooling people to believing he gets visions instead of his actual ability to solve cases.  This show is incredibly funny and the dynamic between Sean and his partner Gus is the stuff of best childhood friends.   One special note is this show lampoons Hollywood, movies, actors and is like the ultimate prank and spoof.

The Deadliest Catch

Discovery

I don’t watch very many reality shows but Deadliest Catch has been a must watch program for several years now.  Following the crab fishing seasons in Alaska, this show follows the lives of several captains and crew out of Dutch Harbor as they fish for King Crab and Opelio crab.  This show shows you how dangerous this profession is, but when deckhands can earn tens of thousands of dollars for a few weeks worth of work, you see why they put life and limb at risk.

Whale Wars

Animal Planet

Following the journey of the Sea Shephards, this show is very anti Japanese whaling, and shows how the Sea Shephards do everything within their power to prevent the Japanese from killing Minke Whales in the Antarctic Ocean.  Their tactics do borderline on illegal and in many cases, you watch the show and can’t believe they use such harsh measures.  A must watch show if you like animal shows and particularly if you are a fan of whales and animal conservation causes.

The Simpsons

Fox

Even after twenty years of being on the air, The Simpsons is fresh and original with each episode continuing to entertain.  Though having a little more crude humor in recent years, it maintains its comedy without resorting to over the top rude humor like The Family Guy and American Dad.

House

Fox

One of the best medical drama’s on television, House focuses on Hugh Laurie’s character and the medical cases he is presented with rather than the lives of doctors as other medical drama’s focus on.  This show is all about a morally bankrupt doctor whose addiction to pain killers and self destructive tendencies leave him without a social life, but he is so adept at his ability to diagnose and discover the root cause of patient problems that he is often given vast leeway by the hospital he works for.

Heroes

NBC

Though it has had some weak seasons in the latter years, Heroes is still the standard in shows that portray people with special powers and abilities.  Showing how almost everyone has shades of gray and even people with good intentions if they had special abilities would be tempted to use them to their own personal gain.  The show portrays some of the most powerful villains ever seen on television including Sylar who has absorbed so many powers through serial killing that he is nigh indestructible.

Medium

NBC

Following the stories of Allison Dubois who is a character that is inspired by a real life individual living in Arizona, this show follows the life of a Psychic medium whose impressions allow her to assist the Phoenix police with solving murders and crimes.  Most of her clues come to her in dreams, but being psychically tuned she also can get impressions with close contact with individuals or objects.  This show has a very interesting dynamic between Patricia Arquette who plays Allison and her husband as they try to live normal lives with this ability running in the family.  The daughters have even been shown to have inherited their mom’s gift.

That about wraps up my top ten television shows that we watch in my household on a regular basis, though I do tape and watch some others from time to time.  I enjoyed several other comedy shows that have come on gone on Network television in recent years.  We tried watching HawthoRNe but just couldn’t get into the show, ER used to be on the list of watched shows but that show ended after so many years.

What are my readers top ten television programs, what do you all like?
