You do realize that sending email whether it is through your local outlook, thunderbird or online via gmail, yahoo or other online email service is not secure. Your email passes through the internet in packets that can be seen as plain text. This is why it is extremely risky to email any sensitive data online, there are hackers and companies that sniff for information to use in spamming, marketing or simple identity theft.
Purchasing secure and encrypted email solutions can be costly, there are many sites out there that offer such a service. One such site is Privacy Harbor which has a very impressive Basic Secure Email service that is free to customers.
This secure email solution allows you to send 60 secure emails per month with no ads or marketing whatsoever like most free companies do to offer free services. You get Secure emails, Anti-Spam, Filters, Support and 100MB of email storage for free.
For enterprise solutions or if you want additional features and services, they have plans starting at just $4.95 per month which allow for file sizes up to 100MB to be attached in secure emails.
Remember, anything you type in an email from a non-secure email service or without some sort of encryption installed is in clear text, so whenever you enter in accuont information, addresses, phone numbers you are potentially leaking this information to anybody on the internet who sits between you and your destination and can extract it.
If you are worried about sending sensitive data, it is worth signing up for a Secure Email service, even if you only send a few emails that are “worthy” of being secured, it is worth having a free account with Privacy Harbor.

They have free email signup, and give you 60 secure outgoing emails per month for free. I would use this free service and any emails that you want your attachments or words secure use this service to compliment your existing email service.

Email security can be a complex subject as can any other type of security. I prefer using GPG message encryption and a email server with secure links to transmit any sensitive information. Yes, it requires coordination with the receiver to use public key cryptography but, I would not trust sensitive information with anyone not willing and capable of using such tools.
A more in-depth discussion of email security can be found on novo-ordo.com including a comparison of various secure email providers.

We use Echoworx encryption products. Very low cost, easy to use (even for my executives and business types), and based on standards (PKI, X.509, RSA, internet email). It just works.

The easiest way to secure emails and files/documents is using the Voltage Security Network. It’s really cool…you can send to anyone securely from your regular email inbox without having to know their public key, or without them needing to have software on their end to receive or reply securely as well. Check out the demo and you can actually try it free here: http://www.voltage.com/vsn
