Find Independent Games with Archive Games

Posted by: dragonblogger  //  Category: Gaming

I am always scouring the internet for freeware and demo’s of games that I can download for several reasons. #1, I like to find free RTS or RPG games and stack them up against the commercial once, and #2 I am always trying to find new games my son can play without having to spend a fortune since he goes through games so quickly.

This brings up a website I found called Archive Games that hosts a varied collection of games created by independent developers. Currently about half of the titles listed on Archive Games were freeware and one that stood out was Glest which is a 3D RTS game that has really nice visuals and is really enjoyable for being a freeware title.

Archive Games also has some linux games available in addition to Windows games, no specific MAC OS games found yet listed on the site. The site currently has just over twenty games listed with most selling for under $13 for full titles, and some selling for less than $5, while others are completely free. Almost all of the games allow a free downloadable demo so you can try the game to decide whether you like it or not.

Archive Games caters to indie developers looking to put their games online for people to start purchasing and testing, they even allow games listed to be put in a private beta for invitation only. I think its a great idea and the site has tons of potential as it grows, we know that independent gaming markets are rapidly growing on consoles and the PC alike, user created games may not have the flashy appearances of commercial games, but most make up for it in innovative gameplay and creativity you don’t see as much from commercial game publishers anymore who stick to rigid success formulas.

As the site grows bigger I hope they break out their browse games into categories, so you can quickly tell which ones are action, RPG, adventure, RTS and even a section for games for kids under 10.

If you like downloading and playing free games, or just want to see some new games then I encourage my readers to check out Archive Games, and see what the independent game creators have to offer. Besides, in addition to getting some new and original games you will be supporting the independent gaming community and the developers who are trying to bring creative and quality games to you.

Glest is by far the best free RTS game I have seen, my 6 year old has played it for about 20+ hours and even though he has trouble reading the game is able to upgrade units and work toward the Behemoth and War Machine.
