I always browse Major Geeks website, which has some of the best and latest freeware tools and utilities for computer users, one of the most recent tools I downloaded and installed is “CleanMem v.1.4.2″ which is a small footprint program that uses Windows empty.exe API to automatically force all of your processes to release unused memory.

I downloaded CleanMem v.1.4.2 and installed it, to test it I had opened several programs including FireFox, Chrome, TweetDeck, Thunderbird, and then opened 20 tabs in firefox and chrome.exe.

I show you my process list before with Firefox taking over 160mb of RAM, tweetdeck consuming over 80mb and Google Chrome having many processes consuming 33, 30, 22mb ram in the top 3 but there are 7 processes listed for Google Chrome (actually its more like 20 since I had 20 tabs open).

I ran the CleanMem program and immediately saw all processes reset to 1mb or lower, then start climbing back as they grabbed what they needed. After letting it sit for a whole minute, then I saw that Firefox was reduced to 69mb of utilization and tweetdeck to 64mb with all Chrome processes reduced to 6mb or less. This is an improvment of nearly 50% on some processes and 60% overall against all processes.

This program is designed to run in your task scheduler at set intervals, it does not run as an active process and starts/stops immediately when run. The author of this program claims you can run it even while playing memory hungry MMO games and you won’t suffer any side effects. I for one am now using this process because I was so impressed with the results and my system is noticeably faster when I have multiple tabs open in firefox and chrome. Literally that sluggish slow down you get from leaving applications open to long is resolved by having this program running in your scheduler.

I highly recommend CleanMem v.1.4.2 if you run Windows XP or VISTA, and its complete freeware which is the best part.
