Review:

The second episode in the Villains volume has the heroes hunted in the aftermath of the plane crash, I thought several things about this episode were good, but also several things I just didn’t like as much. First the plane crash itself was alluded to but never shown, and this was probably for budget reasons the show probably didn’t have the budget to do an actually full CGI plane crash and effects so showed the aftermath instead. There was a little confusion as the show showed Nathan on the phone 48 hours after the crash talking to his mother and flashing back to what happened just after the crash. They did a few flash forward and back scenes which was a little confusing I thought.

Matt, Hiro and Mohinder flee together only to have Matt go into a vision trance and must paint some scenario’s about to occur. One of these is Daphne being shot and killed at the crash site so he leads the others back to try and rescue her. Daphne who was alarmed at Matt’s disappearance found Ando and the two of them used Hiro’s GPS implant to learn their location and speed their way to them.

Honestly what is so good about painting the future if they can’t stop it, Matt didn’t know if his presence meant she would be shot, or if by him not showing up she would have avoided being shot. So by him trying to save Daphne she ends up getting shot and killed right in front of him, in his rage he mentally controlled one of the soldiers and forced him to shoot his comrades before he was himself shot down. After escaping we see Matt now just wants revenge for what happened to Daphne.

Peter and Tracy banded together to try and entrap Nathan so they can end the whole government plot against them, this failed because of Nathan’s cunning ability to calm Tracy down and appear sincere. Meanwhile we show that Nathan does still care about his brother because when HRG was about to assassinate him, HRG claims he has no clear shot when he actually did. Nathan thanked him for not killing Peter.

We see a mess of all kinds where Nathan is starting to lose control, his own team is going to eventually defect against him. Somehow his ability to keep his own powers hidden and lead a whole lie is among the most hated and vile thing about this character. Even as he sees Tracy locked up in a van and she screams “You are one of Us” his coldness is literally chilling as he can just walk away emotionless.

Throughout the episode we see Claire trying to go against her fathers (Nathan and HRG) but she is used more like a prop and always caught, always being shuffled out of the way and to safety. Mr. Bennett does confide in Claire that this whole operation is big, and that he is trying to help prevent the Heroes from being killed and to keep her safe. We will probably see Mr. Bennett defect against Nathan’s operation and help where he can.

Now, by far the best part of the episode was Sylars parts in it. He had found out the soldier he was trying to torture wouldn’t loosen his tongue, so he was going to torture a neighboring family right in front of the soldier’s eyes to try and get him to open up. The teenager who has an overbearing and controlling mother in his anger and frustration lets out a microwave type blast that can cook objects at a distance. Sylar seems to take a liking to the boy and the boy seems to take a liking to Sylar. When the soldier manages to get out of his binding and pull a gun on Sylar from behind, the kid fry’s the soldier to his mom screaming that they could have been free.

Sylar leaves but the kid asks to be taken along and that he knows where Sylar’s father is, Sylar reluctantly agrees and the two of them steal the mom’s car and drive. This shows a little bit of the humanity we liked about Sylar and I know Sylar is torn between killing the kid and acquiring his powers and helping him as he sees himself in this teenage boy.

I am looking forward to the next episodes. I really want to see what happens when Sylar meets his father and I really am curious to see how the small band of heroes tries to take the offensive against the operation. One thing though, Peter mentions he can only hold onto one power at a time, his ability to acquire multiple powers is lost. Obviously when he was injected by the serum the ability he developed is only similar but not nearly as powerful as his natural ability. Hiro also claimed that his destiny lies in India where he thinks he might be able to acquire his power again by finding another mystical sword. It should be interesting to see how that plays out.

I really have enjoyed Heroes so far this season. I am a little upset that they decided to kill Daphne though I can understand why as this will probably have a definite effect on the development of Matt Parkman.

I do have one question maybe you can help with. Do you know what happened to the young girl who could locate all the Heroes anywhere in the world? She live with Parkman in a previous season. Just curious where she went and if she may show up later with these government types being forced to locate the others.

The girl was sent to Europe to live with some family, they deemed it too dangerous for her to live in the states. This was explained in the 2nd season where Mohinder and Suresh were sharing an apartment.

As far as Peter goes he mentioned only being able to hold one power at a time but when his first power originated he had the same problem, on top of the fact that he had to be around the person. He probably needs to develop it like he did with his original one before he can become as powerful as he was and rival/become stronger than Sylar once more. Also I noticed that instead of following fate he seems more like the leader he should have been for the anti-villian’s last volume.

I agree, Peter finally is starting to act like a leader after being much more passive previously. He finally realizes he needs to take action, he is still naive but not nearly as much as Hiro. But the more harm and suffering he see’s the more bitter he is becoming, gone is the innocent ultimate caring nurse he used to be.

You probably are right that he can absorb more powers, but what about getting them by touching, just coincidence or is it just the way it used to be?

I’m thinking that since he’s being betrayed by people close to him he’s having a harder time connecting to people the way he used to. Which would be why he needs to touch them to get their power now. In Villians Arthur said that Sylar had the same power as Peter but he couldn’t access it which lead to his scalping people. So it might be heading that way for Peter.

Brilliant reply, you are totally right. Sylar got Elle’s power via EMPATHY when they were locked in the room without having to hurt her. Empathy is how they can acquire the powers just by being next to them, without empathy they need physical contact or some other way. That makes total sense why Peter is now requiring physical contact, he has lost empathy which was something he was so full of.
