Well though Fallout 3 is presented, I still don't think there's anything wrong per se with third person or even isometic approaches a la Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate etc.Fallout 3 was good, but shallow and in places sloppy. There's parts that seem unfinished or overly light (the radio broadcasts will drive you crazy - they licensed a grand total of 20 music tracks for a game that lasts hours).
