Our friends over at Kingston Technology wanted to showcase their DataTraveler Elite 3.0 USB Flash drives to show just how fast they can help you backup and move files between your PC and these incredible USB drives.

They sent me a review copy to test with and were kind enough to send me 2 more 32GB DataTraveler Elite 3.0 USB flash drives to give away to my readers in a contest which kicks off at the end of this article.

IMG_0044

First, USB 3.0 is so much faster than USB 2.0 I put these Kingston Technology USB 3.0 flash drives on both my USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports on my computer and tested with groups of smaller files and single large files so you can see how fast they transfer data for yourselves.

First, I used the benchmark test for a USB 2.0 port to see how fast someone can expect the transfers to be if they don’t have a USB 3.0 port yet.

USB2Kingston

A very respectable 28.2MB/second was achieved writing to the Kingston USB Flash drive when it was plugged into a USB 2.0 port.

But, when plugging it into a USB 3.0 port, the Kingston DataTraveler 3.0 drive really shined and hit a peak of 58MB/second and was able to transfer a 1.45GB file in under 12 seconds total.

USB3Kingston

Repeat testing did show it vary between 30 and 60MB/second so it doesn’t stay at the highest numbers the whole time, but it was always faster than the USB 2.0 ports which never got more than 28MB/second writes to the flash drive.

kingstonusb

Read speeds were even faster, able to reach above 80MB/second at it’s peak but average in the 70MB/second.

Note, I had faster results writing from my SSD drive to my USB 3.0 Flash Drive than from my 7200 2TB Hard Drive as well.

Either way, these 32GB USB 3.0 flash drives from Kingston Technology are fast and well worth the price.  I was so impressed and glad I got to keep a copy and it was invaluable in helping me transfer data from my son’s old computer to his new computer I was building up, as well as moving data around between machines which weren’t on the home network and I didn’t want to bother setting up folder shares.

  • Justin, can we plug USB 3.0 drive into 2.0 port? As my laptop does not have any 3.0 port. Will there be any difference in speed?

    •  @techblazes Yes, if you read the details of the review I show transfer speeds from plugging it into a USB 2.0 port, it works great and is faster than most USB 2.0 flash drives but just can’t reach the same speeds as a USB 3.0 port.

      •  @Dragon Blogger Thanks Justin, it would be good if we could upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0. 🙂

  • hestar69

I want it so I could use it for backing up important documents, pics, drivers and stuff that in case my hard drive crashes,I won’t be THAT mad..

    •  @hestar69 Yeah, 32GB is a lot and holds about all my photo’s, another 32GB would hold all my music (just about, now that I am on Spotify).  These drives are great.

  • MichalMichelleRamos

I’d use it to backup our digital photos and videos.

  • ChrisConley1

Since I managed to “misplace” my primary flash drive during my move, I could definitely stand to replace it with something much, much better.

    •  @ChrisConley1 I’ve always had smaller ones, really small 4GB and 8GB ones.  I lost both of them, some where fingernail sized.  I actually prefer that this one is about the size of 1 1/2 AA batteries side by side in thickness.

  • Raymond Cubeta

Use it as backup device for my files! 🙂

  • conanedogawa97

I want to win this because my family and I always travel around and we usually take a lot of photos and videos and sometimes the storage of the camera and video camera is almost full and we can’t take anymore of the photos and videos. We did bring a laptop with us but the laptop is my father’s and is used for doing his office works, so we can’t delete any things when it is full after the transferring of photos and videos. Please let me win! 🙂

    •  @conanedogawa97 Good luck, there are 2 winners for this contest so odds are double!

  • MuraliAggithaya

At present i just have a gb kingsto pen drive and hoping to make an upgrade to 16 gb. But 32 gb will just be perfect. Thanks for the nice giveaway.

  • MuraliAggithaya

At present i just have a 4 gb kingston pen drive and hoping to make an upgrade to 16 gb. But 32 gb will just be perfect. Thanks for the nice giveaway.

  • secretclean

I would love to win this so I could use it to cart around IT projects and examples for when I go to interviews. I just graduated from college and have little money to afford good tech, so I’m pretty much stuck with my 2007 laptop until I can either get a job or win something better. So yeah, this would help me out greatly. Thanks for the contest!

    •  @secretclean If you are going to be carrying around work data, consider using http://www.truecrypt.org/ to keep your data encrypted in case the USB drive should be stolen or lost.  It’s free and recommended.

  • I really love the speed of USB 3.0. I already have a Kingston DT Ultimate G2 but wouldn’t mind wining a 32 GB Datatraveler Elite too 🙂

  • omegadoom1

I would use the Kingston DataTraveler Elite 3.0 USB Flash Drive for schoolwork, storing music files, videos, pictures, documents, and other important files.  At 32GB, it would help eliminate the need for multiple flash drives. Since it can utilize USB 3.0, I would be able to devote my time to other tasks!  Thanks!

  • zero110100

I would like one to store all my music and podcast.I’m currently using my 8gb Kingston flash cart.

  • slugbug55

Can always use a larger thumb drive.

  • JamesThompson2

Been tryin to get my hands on one of these!

  • WadeArenberg

These are very nice thumb drives and any IT guy would appreciate them 🙂

  • Rocky_G

Please count me in. I need one of these so bad. I am always transferring files. My flash drive is to small =(

    •  @Rocky_G Yeah, I am surprised how often I am using mine to move around MP3 files between my kids computers and my own lately.

  • ClaytonChabannes

I would use it for documents, photos, and music if I won 🙂

  • OregonSlacker

WooHoo Thanks for the awesome giveaway, Kingston Rocks the House!

  • OregonSlacker

I’d use it to transfer movies and other videos to friends computers!

  • Daniel Telea

This would be a nice win

  • PeterRogala

These are very nice flash drives and find myself need bigger and faster portable flash keys every day.

  • vhick

Kingston is one makers of the best USB drives and I hope I one of the winners. I like to use it in my personal files like music and photo files, and also, software storage.

    Thank you for the giveaway!

  • It’s sound amazing to get such high speed and that too on 32GB flash drive. I really want to try this out and if I win here then surely going to write about the flash drive on my blog and will run a giveaway there also as my readers will be happy too. It’s always great to get such high end products and I really want to win this giveaway.

Thank you for organizing this giveaway and hope for the best.

    •  @Jeet Dholakia Very happy to give back and our sponsor Kingston Technology was awesome to give me some of these to give away.

  • khangptit1992

i hope i will win this time,i really want this USB,for my work and learning ,thank you

  • Dragonblogger

2 winners this time, so double the odds of winning.

  • AlexanderGenvarev

Great giveaway! Thank you for a chance!

  • dl4download

    Wow !!! thats really grt… thank u for sharing… 🙂

  • Great hard drive, most of the time of this hard drive is very expensive but the price is justified.

  • Kingston is a leading company when it comes to drives, hard drives or flash drives. I am sure that this product will be successful again!

  • lmd1974

I want to win a 32 GB USB 3.0 flash drive because I own a 4 GB USB 2.0 flash drive.
If I win, I would use it to backup game saves, 1000s of pictures, and other important files.

    •  @lmd1974 Yeah, 32GB does hold a lot so the stick is perfect, and you can even leave it plugged in and setup Syncback to synchronize only newer files to it.

      • PeterRogala

@Dragon Blogger That a spot on idea to setup Syncback to write newer files. A 32GB drive is perfect. Did not think of it before because the one I have are too small for this.

      • PeterRogala

@Dragon Blogger  @lmd1974 That is a spot on idea, to set up Syncback to write newer files. a 32GB drive is great for this. Did not think of this before. The ones I have may be too small. Appreciate this discussion, and thanks again for the giveaway. big fan of Kingston ram and the Kingston SSD I have works really great too.

        •  @PeterRogala  @lmd1974 Yeah, the 32GB and 64GB ones are perfect for just leaving them in with scheduled jobs to synchronize photo’s, video, mp3 or even documents in your My Documents that change, this way you can just unplug and take with you and keep all your stuff current.  Of course you can do the same with a cloud backup solution, but feels more safe having my USB backups for local copy.

  • amityjill

Please let me win this one, ><

  • I am looking forward to win that contest and will surely add more ons. I am also using USB data traveller devices of Kingston and they are working well and are very fast and reliable.

  • I am looking forward to win that contest and will surely add more ons. I am also using USB data traveller devices of Kingston and they are working well and are very fast and reliable.

    •  @Reeha@printer toners This is a great USB Stick I have used it about 3 dozen times since I got mine.

      • reeha@inkjet

@Dragon Blogger  @Reeha@printer toners  @printer  @printer so it meanz that this one got potential to give it a try. i will surely give it a try however will  try to win it through your giveaway.

  • mahalokawaii

wanna have this for data back up, this is handy.

  • magnet972

    is this open international? 🙂

    •  @magnet972 Yes, but outside the US you are responsible to cover shipping costs.

  • Bogdan Neagoe

This is the best thing you can use to get to play Diablo 3 stutter free.
I’m currently using my Kingston DT 2.0 16 GB with great results, but that has laughable results compared to this.

    •  @Bogdan Neagoe Elaborate more, how do you leverage a USB stick to make Diablo 3 Stutter Free?

      • Bogdan Neagoe

@Dragon Blogger The biggest problem (for me) besides connection problems resides in the fact that all assets (spell effects, sounds, etc.) are loaded in the instant they are needed by the game.
Even though the initial loading time when staring a game is ridiculously small (for me about 5-8 seconds), you get stutters and freezes every time a new sound is played, a new spell is cast, which in coop games becomes game-breaking as you can die easily.
Can’t even imagine what playing Hardcore with this problems is like (unless you own a SDD maybe).

After installing the game on the HDD you can make a copy of the entire game folder (Blizzard games are usually self-contained) to a USB drive and run the launcher from within.
Most of the heavy 3-5 seconds stuttering is gone and gameplay becomes much smoother (you mileage might vary though).
The simple reason for this is the difference of seek times between the HDD and the USB drive (12-17 ms vs. 1 ms).
The volume of data to be transferred is not that big (that’s why even with ~20 mb/s my pen drive works better than the HDD), but access times becomes vital.

Blizzard admitted to the problem (even though laughably they are unable to reproduce it) after thousands of forum posts reported it, and promised a fix in a future patch.
But unless they change the core structure of file loading in their engine (unlikely), the problem is here to stay.

I believe with a USB 3.0  drive, the game would work even smoother, because of much better transfer times (70 vs 20 sounds a world of difference).
As I am unable to purchase one (blew my money on the game) I entered your giveaway. Hopefully I have a chance to win.

        •  @Bogdan Neagoe Sounds horribly inefficient, they should just load as much as it can into ram.  Well I hope it helps, a USB drive would have faster initial fetch times, but wouldn’t be faster than a 7200RPM drives I wouldn’t think on SATA.

        • Bogdan Neagoe

           @Dragon Blogger
Well, I have a 7200 RPM SATA HDD (WD6400AAKS) and there is no comparison as far as Diablo 3 is concerned.
The Kingston USB drive gives WAY better performance. Even SD cards have been reported to work better than HDD’s (WD Raptors with their 10000 RPM’s in RAID stutter with this game.
You just can’t beat Flash Drive access times, that’s all, and with Diablo3’s loading system is all about speed, not volume.

        •  @Bogdan Neagoe It’s true, that initial spin of the disk adds that latency that causes that stutter.  I only recently got a 90GB SSD Drive but use it mostly for Windows OS and most common loaded apps, still use my 2TB 7200RPM drive for most of my games.  I haven’t played Diablo 3 yet only the Beta but didn’t notice any stutter when playing the Beta.

  • GrrGrrr

    Thanks Justin for the giveaway.
I would like too enter and win one of the Kingston drives as this is for new/faster USB 3.0 and comes from the most reliable brand Kingston.

    Please count me in.

    Thanks, Grr

    •  @GrrGrrr Thanks for entering, I love this drive myself and it already has become handy.  I used it to move mp3 files between my kid’s PC’s for Spotify just yesterday.

  • Edward

    Thanks for the giveaway.

I actually have a collection of various sizes of flash drives. It would be nice to add a 32 GB drive to the collection. I would also use it to back up random files I have lying around the place.

  • Yeah Thanks for discussing them.

  • Naddez

I would use it to Transfer  & backup data, thanks! 🙂

  • Naddez

    I would use it to Transfer  & backup data, thanks! 🙂  {Quanda}

  • That’s a really impressive looking flash drive! I’d love to win it!

  • Vikas Bhatt

I would be very happy to win this great giveaway.

  • I could never have too many usb drives, this would be my first 3.0

    •  @Jamie Northrup It is really fast, about 25-30% faster than USB 2.0 and mostly I can see when I copy large android .apk files or TV shows the extra speed makes a difference.

  • harley14

i like kingston’s product. I trust the manufacturer.

  • ebusinessmom

Great post you got there. Typical Issue and its very relevant since there are many people who are have the same concern. Thank you for putting up a topic like that. Rock on!

  • CherryRasulka

I could put all of my photo’s from my So Cal trip on there when I run out of space on my SD card while visiting

    •  @CherryRasulka Good luck, 32GB can hold quite a lot of photo’s for transport.  Some digital photo frames use USB sticks too so could have a photo frame with never ending photos to rotate through too!

      • PeterRogala

@Dragon Blogger That is a great  idea with the photo frame, and no doubt the 32 GB storage size would be great for sharing some of .video clips too.! my nephew has 2 newborn girls and he certainly takes a lot of pics and a few videos.

  • Bogdan Neagoe

I just lost my data traveler, the 16 gb drive from which I was running Diablo 3. That sucks hard. Now if only Rafllecopter was as easy to hack as Blizzard accounts apparently are… 😉

    •  @Bogdan Neagoe These drives aren’t that expensive, if you really need one you could just save up.

  • I would be very happy to win this great giveaway.

  • khangptit1992

haha it’s hard to win this event, there are many comments now and my odd of win is very low, it will be very very lucky if i will this time

    •  @khangptit1992 The winner is chosen randomly and not just from comments, get as many entries as possible to increase your odds of winning.

      • khangptit1992

@Dragon Blogger thank you for your advise, i will try to post many entries as i can (not spamming)

  • Ash98

USB 3.0 is amazingly fast! I am going to enter the competiton, thanks for the great oppurtunity 🙂 http://htcwildfiresblog.com

  • I decided to check out this drive after being supremely disappointed with several other supposed USB 3.0 drives, and this one blew me away. I love that transfer rate 🙂

    • khangptit1992

but this kingston USB 3.0 have a low price and i think u will like it

    • The transfer rates of this drive are amazing if you have a USB 3.0 port, but they do very well even on USB 2.0

  • khangptit1992

if u don’t win this Giveaway , u can buy a kingston USB dataTraverler for ur own here:
    http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-DataTraveler-DTE30-16GB/dp/B007PRHNIS
      only 22,2 $ !!

  • AnnamalaiNagappan

I love to win as I have only a 4GB pen-drive and so far i hadn’t used flash drives.

    •  @AnnamalaiNagappan Good luck, this is a great drive. I am using it now as a Ram Drive for my wife’s Vista system which only had 2GB of RAM and it makes some games playable that weren’t previously.

  • LauLau81

I am also using USB data traveller devices of Kingston and they are working well and are very fast and reliable.

  • Jcces44

Man, I’d love to win this! I could move files from my old computer at lightning speed

  • Valerie George

I would like to win this so I can combine the flash drives I have. It will make work so much easier!

  • Benjamin Kerensa

I already have one 😛 In fact I have too many thumbdrives

  • Dragonblogger

Yeah, I only had a bunch of 4GB and 8GB ones you pick up from conferences, this 32GB one rocks though, blazingly fast copy speeds.

  • Benjamin Kerensa

Yeah Kingston hooks me up too… and Verbatim 😉 etc

  • Sandy N

I would use it to backup my daughter’s homeschool program, and to move it to another computer to free mine back up sometimes lol

    • Many programs embed registry settings so just copying files doesn’t always make a program work, be wary of this.

  • GiveawayContests

Got any contacts at Verbatim, would love to reach out to them.

  • luckylady4163

I would use it to back up files on this slow , old comp what I wish I would have done on my other comp before it got fried.

    •  @luckylady4163 I used mine as a Ram Drive for my wife’s old Vista computer which had only 2GB of RAM and it actually helps quite a bit.

  • really wonerful information for all of us. Quite impressive.

  • victorcarazo

    Quite Impressive!!! And very useful.

  • khangptit1992

if i have this USB, it’ll very useful for backing up my files, my HDD is nearly dead –_–

    •  @khangptit1992 Yeah, good to have files backed up just in case. In the meantime use a cloud service like Dropbox or Microsoft Skydrive.

  • RonaldSmith

This is a really nice contest.  The article was very nice as well.  Informative and well written.  Thanks for hosting this giveaway and good luck to all!

  • whitesoulband

I’d use it to transfer some files from my laptop that I don’t need to use every day, so I could free up some space on the hard drive.

  • Gram_Cracker

I need this so I can transfer more than a file or two at a time. All of my flash drives have tiny capacity. I need one with a bit of meat on its bones.

  • khangptit1992

hurry up, 2 days latter and we will know who is the winner ,goodluck

  • ElizabethThomas

I’d use it to backup files and move them between computers. It would be nice to have considering I don’t have any USB flash drives bigger than 1 GB.

  • alsvegas

@alsvegas want to win to use on my son’s xbox 3go or ps3 for our home movies

  • Claire

I’d use it to transfer some files from my laptop that I don’t need to use every day

It’s an awesome prize! I don’t see why anyone would wait to reply 🙂

  • Dragonblogger

Well, the iPad 3 giveaway it took 30 hours to hear back from the winner! They wouldn’t send me photo holding the prize either 🙁 I wanted to showcase to my readers to show how awesome of a prize it was and show that I really gave one away.

  • Alan Tong

That sucks because the winner won an awesome prize! Oh well, maybe the conclusion of this giveaway will turn out differently.
