There are many great plug-ins to reduce spam, Akismet is one of the most popular one but I notice a loophole, this plug-in mostly catches and removes comments with hyperlinks, but what about all those annoying comments that say “hi, nice blog” or “great blog” or “dropped by”. These comments don’t catch as spam, but you don’t want a whole slew of these rather bland and boring comments contaminating your blog.

Yoast has a great plug-in called Minimum Comment Length which allows you to specify the minimum amount of characters a comment can be. The default is 15 characters, and if a commentor doesn’t meet the minimum content lenght, they will be shown an error message which you can customize as well.

I really recommend you download Minimum Comment Length and install it on your wordpress blogs. Either leave the default 15 char minimum or set it higher or lower depending on your preference, also you can customize the feedback text.
