This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Nielsen Research. All opinions are 100% mine.

Nielsen has teamed up with Nokia to offer an application for the Symbian which allows you to influence the future of Nokia Smartphones.  This application works by you just installing it and letting it collect data in the background to monitor the usage of the phone, so Nokia can make improvements to the OS/future phones based on usage data.

The app exists for virtually every single Nokia phone that exists now that uses the S60 Operating System, including the 52xx / 53xx series, E60, E70, N90 and X6 Nokia Smartphones.

To get started and earn your Nokia $100 gift certificate all you have to do is signup for the Smartphone application.

You will receive a SMS text with the link to download the application and if you install the application and leave it on your phone for 1 year you will receive a $100 Nokia Gift Certificate that you can put toward a phone upgrade or new Nokia Smart Phone.

My immediate concern regarding this contest would be about what kind of data is being collected.  Nielsen reports the following in their FAQ about the Nokia app:

Q. What type of data is being collected?
A. The application measures general usage of your phone. For example, we collect information on:

  • the type, name, use and installation of applications and games
  • the address of the websites you visit
  • the date and duration of the websites you visit
  • the date, time and duration of phone calls, but not details on the phone numbers you call or receive calls from
  • the date and time you send text/picture messages to or receive text/picture messages from
  • the date, time, type and name of Bluetooth devices used with your phone
  • the date and time when USB devices are connected to your phone
  • battery levels, charger states, alarm usage, profile changes
  • information on network traffic, use of WLAN and use of GPS
the network performance of your phone, including signal quality readings and information on failed calls

Note:  We do not listen to or record any of your phone calls. We also do not examine, store or record any of the content of text or picture messages you send or receive. In addition, we cannot and do not read any of the contents of your other files or email messages.

They also mention that the app uses a little under 1MB of data per month to transfer logs to Nielsen for those on limited data plans.  Nielsen gives you the option to cancel at any time, but you lose eligibility for the $100 Nokia Gift Certificate if you cancel before the year is up.

I do think the idea of passive monitoring and surveys for companies to provide feedback to make products better is a good way for companies to learn the usage pattern of devices in order to make improvements.  I don’t however think $100 gift certificate for keeping the application on for a full year is a sufficient reward for letting that much data be collected.  I would have liked Nielsen to offer the coupon in stages like earn $25 per month you keep the application installed (up to a set amount like) or even allow for a complete free Nokia Smart Phone upgrade at the end of the year.

Before I work with any company I always take the time to make sure they are reputable, especially if I am going to be allowing a company to collect data and information on me.  Nielsen is a huge market survey and research company though and has an A+ Nielsen Rating:

Having only 24 complain5s in 36 months with all of them resolved, and none of the complains were anything I would consider severe.  (In case you think 24 complaints is a lot, know that Amazon.com had 2633 complaints to the BBB in the past 36 months for a comparison).

In Review

If you use a Nokia Smartphone using the S60 operating system, this is a decent way for you to install an application, allow some usage data collection and receive a $100 Nokia Gift Certificate in a year which could go toward getting you a smart phone upgrade.  You also are helping Nielsen and Nokia collect phone usage information so that they can improve their Nokia Smartphone and Symbian Operating System design to be more user friendly and have additional features.
