PS Vita Features you Should Get Excited About

The PS Vita is Sony’s latest addition to their current gaming console portfolio. Replacing the PSP and newer PSP Go, the PS Vita brings with it some really exciting new features which most portable gaming console fans have been crying out for from Sony to include for years. So just what are these features, and should you consider the PS Vita as an addition to your gadget arsenal when global economic times are so tough?
Dual analog sticks
Everybody I know of who owns a Playstation 3 uses the joypads on their controllers to control games. This isn’t because the unidirectional pad is bad, it is just that it is reserved in most games as an extra control (such as Ratchet and Clank, where you select weapons).Thankfully, the PS Vita ports across the Playstation 3′s form factor in this sense, as it makes do with dual analog joysticks allowing gamers to fully immerse themselves in a games content and get the most out of their game play. What’s more, the new analog sticks have been redesigned from the past, and stick out a little bit further than before for ideal thumb control.
Cross Play
Unlike previous Playstation portable gaming consoles, Sony has brought out a feature which is quite nifty indeed. Basically, the jist of it is is that you can connect to your PS3 from your PS Vita. What this means is that will be able to side load your videos, music and compatible games onto the PS Vita. Also of interest is that there are currently a few PS Vita gaming titles that allow for in-game communication between the two machines. Taking WipEout as an example, PS Vita players will be able to challenge PS3 users who have a copy of WipEout HD to multiplayer racers and compete with them.
Rear touch pad
Now although the prospect of a rear touchpad sounds a little bit bizarre, just imagine it as like using your touchpad on a laptop. All in all, once immersed in a game, it becomes second nature to use it. So what is the use? Well Sony is saying that the “rear multi touch pad gives you greater hand control while freeing up the brilliance of the front OLED screen”, however in reality it is there to simply offer gamers more submersible content. The rear touch pad is sort of a new concept from Sony in their handheld gaming consoles and having used it first hand, it’s pretty slick.
Front and rear camera’s
Ahh yes, the incorporation of cameras on portable electronics. Nintendo did it, Apple did it with their iPod, and tablet manufacturers are doing it across the board, so Sony did the same. Now early reviews speculate that the camera’s are pretty good, however will you really be trying to capture scenic landscapes whilst skiing in Switzerland with your PS Vita? I doubt it. Overall, the camera’s are passable on the Vita, and they work surprisingly well for fun and giggles.
Overall
Overall the PS Vita is quite the leap forward when you consider its now obsolete brother, the PSP Go, was only released in late 2009. Since then however smartphones has leapt ahead in terms of technology, implementing fast as fudge processors and highly capable GPU’s. The PS Vita matches the current smartphones on the market nearly pound for pound, however can it still sell itself as a hugely powerful in-your-pocket gaming console when the Android marketplace and iOS App Store keeps getting bigger and bigger with hugely addictive games? In a word, I think Sony can. To see this, simply take one look at the top feature above to see why the PS Vita will always be better for gaming than a smartphone. Dual analog sticks for the win.
