My good friend Damien Riley had send me a free pro account on Remember The Milk so I decided to make the most of it and use it as my primary task system. I was using Lightning Add-On on my Mozilla Thunderbird email client and didn’t want to have to open another process or browser window to access tasks, so when doing some digging on the internet, low and behold I found there is an Add-On for Thunderbird that allows you to access tasks two-way for RTM.

This plugin ironically requires that you use Lightning Add-On first which I was already using, so I decided to try it and here are all the instructions to get it setup on your own computer.

  • Step 1 – Download Lightning Add-On For Thunderbird

Before you can get Remember The Milk to work with Thunderbird you have to first download and install the “Lightning Add-On” for Mozilla Thunderbird, which I wrote about here in a previous post:

Add Calendar and Task Management To Thunderbird

  • Step 2 – Download and Install Remember The Milk Add-On

Next you can download the Remember The Milk Thunderbird Add-On and install it. You have to have an account and sign in before Mozilla will let you download the plug-in.

To install the plug-in, just save the .xpi file and then open Thunderbird, click on Add-Ons and install the .XPI file
Then restart Thunderbird.

  • Step 3 – Configuring Lighting to use Remember The Milk

Click Next when finished customizing.

When you are finished you will see a task called “Please Authenticate RTM. Open me to see how”

You have to open the Task and go the URL listed in the Location.

Login to RTM and then Click Allow API

Then mark the task completed and you should see a notice showing that it was successful.

(Note: If it isn’t successful the task will still stay as your only task)

Now all of your tasks for Remember The Milk will show up in Thunderbird and you can create/manage tasks from RTM directly from Thunderbird.
