Watch Heroes Season 3 Episode 5: Angels and Monsters Now:

Before I go into this episode review I just wanted to say that I was wrong about Sylar killing Jesse, it was confirmed in this episode that he did indeed kill Jesse at the bank robbery, I was trying to read something that wasn’t apparently there, looking too hard for clues it would seem.

For the fluidity of my review, I am going with my previous formats, where I relay what happened to the show for the characters, but not necessarily in the scene sequence that happened in the episode. I think this helps with the review rather than doing a scene play by play.

The episode this week was very good on several levels, and some of my favorite scenes involved Hiro early on when he was trying to convince Adam Monroe to help him, as well as when they first arrived at the pub and Hiro compared it to the famous “Cantina on Tatooine”

The episode starts off with a variation of a recap where Nathan is actually narrating and trying to discover why they have the powers they do. We are taken to see him walking in his kitchen in the middle of the night and Linderman appearing before him. Nathan finally realizes that Linderman is not just a figment of his imagination because Mr. Linderman knew Tracy was in trouble and needed to be rescued. We also learn in this episode that Linderman is a mastermind behind some sort of plot to bring villains together. He is not only appearing to Nathan, but to Daphne as well and we see him appear later on and she is looking at files from Level 5 escapee’s.

Peter who teleported into Level 5 in the last episode attacks Sylar and breaks his neck, Angela arrives to try and stop him but he savagely attacks her and starts to open her head as Sylar does to his victims. Sylar regenerates in time to stop him and telekinetically force him against the wall knocking him unconscious.

My favorite scene is when Hiro and Ando are at the casket where Adam Monroe is buried and they open it, Hiro tries several times to convince Adam to help them, and we think he is persuasive, only to be led to a pub where Adam tricks Hiro and escapes. It is funny how Hiro gets punched out several times a season, his wimpy nature is part of what makes the character so entertaining.

Dr. Suresh is capturing people and cocooning them in a new facility he setup in a jungle somewhere. The victims are webbed up against walls and it reminds me of the movie Aliens the way the victims are trapped and alive. Maya of course discovers what is going on and is confronted by Suresh who tricks her to fading her fatal power and then disables her and cocoons her like the others. Suresh is presumably the Monster in the title of the episode.

Claire goes after a villain who can create vortexes which even she could not survive if she were sucked into one. Claire’s mother and biological Meredith attempt to look for her, and Meredith goes after a person she knows lives close by. Claire arrives at the man who can create Vortexes house and temporarily disables him with a stun gun. He sucks the gun into a vortex, these wormholes he can create in front of him. We then learn how he isn’t as “evil” as the rest of level 5, he accidentally killed someone and just wants to see his family. Claire trusts him and tries to help him just as her father and Sylar arrive.

The man creates a wormhole right in front of the three people in front of him and makes a getaway. Claire is so upset her father is working with Sylar we see her trust in him shatter. They later confront the vortex man at a park where he was supposed to meet his family but they never showed up being afraid of him. Claire tries to sympathize with the man and just as she opens up with him a little, HRG shows up with a gun to the man’s head. HRG explains to the vortex man that if he opens a vortex and sucks Sylar into it as he is waiting by the car he will let him go. The vortex man is not evil and refuses to murder and kill sacrificing himself into one of his own vortexes then being caught in the middle of this dilemna.

Sylar of course who gained the super hearing power in Season 1 overheard the whole conversation, now Claire is upset with her father doubly, for teaming with Sylar, lying to her, and forcing a seemingly misunderstood man to commit suicide. Sylar tries to comfort Claire in the car which infuriates HRG even more.

Tracy and Nathan confront Angela and learn that the Company has been making synthesized “Abilities” for a while and Nathan himself is a synthetic as is Tracy and who knows how many others. Nathan and Tracy leave to go find Dr. Suresh since Nathan thinks Suresh can help them.

Angela out of exhaustion falls asleep at her desk to have a vision of the future where she sees Nathan, Tracy and Peter killed in a corridor. She is confronted by her supposedly Dead Husband and is in shock, she is told she won’t be able to move and when she awakes from her vision she is paralyzed at her desk in the sitting position.

Daphne and Knox show up at the pub to recruit Hiro to join their band, Hiro must prove himself “Bad Ass” and is told to kill Ando. This is a shocker, Hiro does indeed plunge the sword directly into Ando’s heart. I assume that Hiro will reverse time on the wound later or somehow prevent Ando’s death, but it is still another blow in the friendship between Hiro and Ando either way.

We then learn that Matt Parkman’s father Maury was planting the Mr. Linderman image in Daphne and Nathan’s head and is working
for Senior Petrelli. Senior Petrelli is critically injured but they are planning on bringing Adam Monroe so that his blood can regenerate Mr. Petrelli.

We also find that Meridith is trapped at the house of a man who appears to be a Puppet Master, who can control other peoples bodies. Meredith is stuck eating dinner and the man controls her to take a bite and then plant him a kiss. The previews would tease us with the man making Claire choose to kill her mother or her biological mother.

Funny how Claire thinks she is immortal and untouchable yet there is always powers and abilities that can make immortality useless.

Another powerful episode left me wishing there was more.

Sorry for the late review folks, I had to watch the show today on DVR and play catch up.
