Review of Heroes Volume 4 Episode 11 – I Am Sylar
This week’s episode of Heroes started off showing the previous eighteen hours just before when the Petrelli gang watched Sylar appear on Television as Nathan Petrelli. We learned that Sylar started developing psychological issues with shapeshifting into an agent under Danko. His Norman Bates like behaviors where he kept transforming into his mother to seek resolution and forgiveness of himself was deeply disturbing and couldn’t help but make you feel sorry for Sylar at several points.
The odd thing about Sylar is he shows humanity and compassion at times, like when he saved Micah’s life and let him go from his residence, but then reverts back into his compassionless, maniacal tendencies. He is a true definition of a sociopathic individual and is the most deeply complicated and disturbing characters on the show.
We see Hiro and Ando finally strengthening their friendship bond as Hiro starts to accept that Ando who know has powers wants to be treated like his equal partner. I love the comparison to Superman and Batman from DC comics, it is very much a nod to the Justice League and all fans of the comic book series. They don’t explain why at the entrance to building 26 when Hiro tries to use his powers he instead suffers a nose bleed, maybe the Haitian is around and is nullifying his powers or some side effect occurred from being jump started by baby Matt Parkman that we haven’t realized.
Meanwhile once again Nathan tries to solve the situation alone only to fall into Sylar’s trap and nearly end up dead, the total surprise is how Danko nailed the sweet spot on Sylar with his pocket knife and Sylar was still able to regenerate. Is Sylar immune to the sweet spot? Is this a benefit of his “transforming ability” or something else? Sylar appears to be truly unstoppable if this is the case.
Matt Parkman manages to save Janice and his baby from being captured but the episode ends with them being surrounded by agents, and he has to figure out a way to escape with his family. The fact that he wants to go back East and fight to earn a chance to be with his family is telling.
With only one season remaining I have no idea how it will end, but I do predict Sylar will finish Danko off, and will either be convinced to let the heroes reclaim their lives or slide back into the shadows. I do not predict he will be killed yet again, only to survive and come back in season 5. If the show were to “falsely kill” Sylar off for a third time then I will be sorely disappointed with the originality of the series.
Who wants to take stabs on how the Season finale plays out? Does it end clean cut, or does it end with another major cliffhanger with everyone still in turmoil and leaving us no closer to figuring out how it will play out until September comes?
Let me know your thoughts fans,
