Laptops are expensive to fix, even if you know how to do it yourself. If your laptop is more than a few years old, fixing a cracked screen alone can often end up costing more than the value of the rest of your computer. Part of this is because of how quickly technology changes, but part of it is also due to the fact that electronics lose their value with a quickness. If your laptop breaks, for any reason, you’re almost always better off trying to sell broken laptop rather than try to find a way to fix it.

Deciding to sell your broken laptop is all well and good, but it’s a bit more complicated than it sounds. An old laptop isn’t like a used car, you can’t really just put it in the local newspaper and hope for the best. There are a couple of reasons why doing that is a bad idea:

  •  The person who buys your laptop isn’t going to let it stay broken. This probably seems kind of obvious (who’s going to buy a computer they can’t use?), but it needs to be said. The reason it’s important to remember is that while your laptop was broken, you were probably unable to access the information on it. When it’s fixed, the next owner will be able to. So, all of the pictures, cached websites, browser cookies, and other files you’ve probably forgotten about will all be right there, ripe for your laptop’s next owner to do whatever he or she likes with them.
  • You aren’t going to get the price you want. There’s almost an unwritten law that says that no posted prices for second-hand goods are firm. If you put your laptop up for sale, you’re probably going to get people who are willing to take the time to argue with you about what you’ve decided to charge.
  • Who wants a broken laptop? Not too many people want to pay for a broken piece of machinery. You’re looking at a very select, niche audience made up of people who are A) capable of fixing a laptop, or B) able to afford to pay someone to do so. Odds are, people in either of these groups are also able to either build their own computers and save money, or afford to buy them new. They probably aren’t going to want a used laptop, and they definitely won’t want a broken one. This will make it exponentially more difficult to sell broken laptop.

The best way to sell broken laptop is to let someone else do it for you. That includes the fixing, shipping, and actual selling part. That means that all you need to do is sit back and get paid. The best way to find someone else to do your selling for you is to look online for a site that specializes in buying broken laptops. These sites usually have the following advantages:

  • Their selling and buying practices will be clearly outlined and easy to follow.
  • They will pay you before your phone is actually sold.
  • They will give you free shipping.
  • They will buy your broken laptop as it is, without requiring it to be repaired first.
  • If any repairs are needed before it can be resold, they’ll handle them.

This also works if you’re trying to sell old cell phones, even broken Blackberries, iPhones, or smartphones. Cell phones are a lot like laptops in that they are designed more with efficiency and compactness in mind, not user-serviceability. So, if your phones are broken or old, you can sell cell phones for cash by going through a site that specializes in refurbishing used phones, rather than recycling them or throwing them away.

If you want to sell old cell phones or broken laptops, you’re going to run into the same challenges. Old or broken things aren’t easy to get rid of, and upgrades or repairs can end up being way more expensive than they’re worth. Don’t trick yourself into thinking that there’s nothing you can do with your old phone or busted computer, sell it to a used electronics website.
