My wife’s company is now on Twitter @rockalong and I didn’t want my wife to have to keep using the web interface to keep track of tweets, replies and direct messages so I had to research the equivelant of tweetdeck on Ubuntu Linux. Spaz turned out to be my decided on client as it appeared to have the most features and nicest looking display compared to the rest of the Ubuntu Twitter clients.

Spaz which is downloadable from Funkatron is a client that uses Adobe Air Runtime just like Tweetdeck, Twirl and many other Twitter clients. You first download the Adobe Air and install it, easy just follow the link below:

  • Download Adobe Air
  • Then you install it on your desktop
  • Open up a terminal
  • Change permissions to 755
  • Then run the program
  • It will prompt you to enter the Administrator password to install (default path is /opt/air)
  • Once it is installed you can install the Spaz client directly from the website:
  • Click Download Spaz
  • Then open with Adobe Air
  • The install will then commence and complete.

Once completed you are taken to the preferences page where you will enter your Twitter ID and password.

Then the application will present you with its main interface which looks like this: (Very twirl like minus the colors)

The application color codes direct messages with a red background, and you can toggle on and off follower tweets and direct tweets by pressing the toggle button. This makes it easy to see who is tweeting you directly. I wish it had 3 columns like Tweetdeck, 1 for replies, 1 for directs and 1 for follower tweets. But it is like Twirl in that it can only do 1 column. The difference is you can see your outgoing tweets, and incoming tweets, but it appears that I could not find a way to only show @replies (I don’t know if they are in the “direct” toggle, I haven’t tested that yet).

The color arrangement is nice, the sending is fast, and it automatically uses TinyURL to convert links to smaller URL’s for you. In all other ways it is a great little client for the Ubuntu Operating System and makes managing your twitter much easier than using the twitter.com website.
