Twitter has switched their default URL shrinking service from TinyURL to Bit.ly which can track the performance of every link shrunk, this means links posted on Twitter in the future hypothetically can be listed and ranked revealing a new type of search that may be the Twitter equivalent of Google searching to see the most relevant links for articles on Twitter. At most this could mean better CPC and ad campaigns targeting CPC with better tracking of results for Twitter campaigns, and entirely new type of ranking system for websites like a TwitterRank in addition to PageRank based on the popularity of a link on Twitter.

Web Site Magazine posted an interesting article about Twitter working towards configuring analytics and search indexing of all links posted on Twitter.  Full article can be read at Web Site Magazine

In my opinion Google should probably buy out Twitter before the entity grows to be a major competitor.
