3 Essentials of Blogging You Don’t Know About

By: Mars Dorian  //  Category: blogging      //  16 Comments »

Hello fellow  digital crusaders,

Today I want to talk more about he psychology part behind blogging, which I find much more vital then the technical part. Great bloggers have mastered this, and it’s part of their success – if not the cornerstone.

I will share some lessons that I have learned from experience and other people. They have helped me a lot so far and changed the way I blog.

It’s time to go deeper into the rabbit hole. And you know what ?

I know your competition !

I always used to compare myself to other bloggers, stuff like  ” This kid is just 16 and he’s already killing – crap ! I have to hurry UP !”  or “Hey, this guy is already 47 and he’s just started bloggging, heh heh, thank god I’m still young!”

You may or may not have similar thoughts, but no matter what’s happening in your mind comparison-wise, I can tell you it’s super-useless. Comparison doesn’t fire your ambitions, it diminishes it. You will never be like someone else, no matter how hard you try.

Your whole story is different – different past, upbringing and destiny.

I stopped wasting my time with these useless thoughts, and came up with something better.

I started focusing on myself, and ONLY on myself. Real growth happens if you improve every single day, based on your standards.

Instead of asking yourself: Am I better than him/her, ask yourself:

Was I better today than yesterday ?

Every digital maverick has one, do you ?

When I find new blogs, the first page I ever lay my eyes on is the about page. I’m soo freaking curious, I always want to know the story behind the blog – it’s a human thing.

And more often than not, I’m disappointed. The story is so generic, and it’s solely based on making money online, one way or another.

This is fine, but it’s not kicking ass. I found out that having a higher goal, like an inspiring mission, is far more powerful and captivating.

Imagine you’re a one of kind blogger, and your message is this:

I want to make a million dollars from my blog, and I will show you how !

Subscribe to my blog and get my FREE newsletter (along with my affiliate product recommendations !)

YOU: zzzzzz…mmmm…NO !

Or how about this one:

I believe in a future where you can work wherever you want, WHENever you want.

If you are the kind of person who enjoys total freedom and wants to control his own destiny, subscribe to my blog and find out how I’ll do it.

YOU:  yes, YES, Y-E-S !

Question: Which one do you prefer ?  I’m confident enough to say it’s the second one. The first addresses your logic, the second one your emotions. Emotions win over logic anytime, it’s part of your biology !

Lesson: Clarify the mission behind your blog. Find a higher goal than just making money – it’s never the money that inspires, it’s the lifestyle you get from it.

You will see – more people will join your mission, which results in deeper loyalty and better word of mouth (yipppieh !)

Tell your audience “Why” you’re doing it – give them the bigger mission behind your blog/business ! And remember,

It’s all about…

Perception. What others say about you is more important what you say about yourself.

And let’s take this a step higher – how others perceive you is more important then what you do.

There a lots of bloggers out there (and no, I’m not dropping names here :) that produce average, and I mean A-V-E-R-A-G-E content – stuff you forget the moment you’re reading it.

And not only is the content boring – the whole blog is uninspiring: Bland design – run-of-the-mill pages etc.

But you know what ? They have still great Authority, which results in great traffic and many RSS subscriptions.

Why ? Because they’re tight with the top players in the blogosphere, and that makes all the winning difference !

“Tell me who’s your friend and I’ll tell you who you are.”

Lesson: Network with the right people (according to you!) and get into their tribe. Their presence will flavor yours. People will notice, and visit your blog. Hang out with authority, and you’ll become the authority.

What’s your take on this ?

And please retweet and share the message !

Building an XML Sitemap in WordPress

By: dragonblogger  //  Category: Internet, blogging      //  13 Comments »

There is a great plug-in for wordpress called “Google (XML) Sitemaps Generator for WordPress” this plug-in once downloaded and installed allows you to configure a sitemap for your blog. If you aren’t using a sitemap for your blog, you definately should be. First off let me explain what a Sitemap is.

Introduction: What is a Site map?
A sitemap also known as a Site Index is basically a listing of every resource in your website or blog in a flat file for easy searching and indexing by major search engines. This is typically an XML type of file. A sitemap will help get all of your blog posts indexed by Google and other major search engines so pages are not missed.

  • First step: Download and Install the Sitemap Plug-In

Go to Arne Brachhold’s web site and download the google-xml-sitemaps-generator for wordpress
Save the file to your computer
Ftp or scp the file to your web server
Put in the wp-content/plug-ins folder of your wordpress installation and make sure it is unzipped there

  • Step 2 – Enabling the Plug-In

Open your WordPress wp-admin site
click on Plug-Ins
Activate your “Google XML Sitemaps” Plug-In

  • Step 3 – Configure the Plug-In

Click on your Settings XML-Sitemap
This will take you to the configuration generator for your XML Sitemap

Make sure the following items are check marked:
Sitemap Files Section:
Write a normal XML File
Write a gzipped file
Building Mode:
Rebuild Sitemap if you change the content of your blog

Update notification:
Notify Google about updates of your blog
Notify MSN Live Search about updates of your blog
Notify Ask.com about updates of your blog
Notify YAHOO about updates of your blog (if you have a yahoo account)
Modify or create robots.txt file in your blog root which contains the sitemap location.

Advanced Options
Build the sitemap in a background process
Post Priority
I do use Post Priority and have it set to prioritize the post by number of comments

Location of your sitemap file
These you should leave default directory and filename, make sure the sitemap.xml exists in your web site root.

Sitemap Content
Include homepage
Include posts
Include static pages
Include categories
Include tag pages
Include author pages
Include archives

Change frequencies
I left most of these default but I noted these:
Homepages and Posts I set to daily because sometimes I make daily updates to POSTS especially opportunities
Static pages, Categories I set to weekly
Archives I set to daily since those grow daily
Older archives I set to yearly
Tag Pages and Author pages I also set to weekly.

Homepage 1
Posts .6
Minimum Post .2
Static Pages .6
Categories .3
Archives .3
Tag pages .3
Author pages .3

Click Update Options or Build your SiteMap Manually (whenver you change these options you should build your sitemap manually).

  • Step 4 – Confirming your sitemap

Now go ahead and hit your sitemap and make sure it is indexed as you want to see it.
type your URL/sitemap.xml
You should see a sitemap page like mine below:

Dragonblogger sitemap

Now just wait for the search engines to update. Once they do you can try doing searches for your own posts and see how often they come up in the search engines.

Stumble Upon’s URL Shrinker

By: dragonblogger  //  Category: blogging      //  4 Comments »

If you haven’t checked out http://su.pr and you are using StumbleUpon then you really should give it a look. StumbleUpon has integrated their site with a URL shrinking service which will not only compress your URL, but will allow it to link to 3 other sites you choose when you configure your profile to show your most stumbled favorites.

In addition when the user visits the su.pr link of your site, they can see how many comments, and share the article on facebook or twitter. These are some of the reasons to use su.pr, when people stumble your articles you can get surges of traffic, and by using su.pr to compress your URL and sharing it over your networks, you make it easier for people to stumble articles even if they don’t have a stumbleupon toolbar installed on their browser.

Dragon Blogger Sets Blog Goals For November 2008

By: dragonblogger  //  Category: blogging      //  No Comments »

So I had set my goals for October 2008 and posted them previously, here is a reprint of my goals for October 2008 vs what I actually achieved.

Keep my Blog < 1000 IzeaRank

I have met this goal and in fact my blog has been in the 300 range for the entire month.

Keep my Blog < 500,000 Alexa Rank\

Again, my 3 month average is in the 200,000 range and this is because my blog only existed for 2 months.  I am the 100,000 range weekly average.

20 new Back Links

I only managed to achieve 11 new back links for the month of October for this blog.

Average Unique Visits to 200 consistently, this means I am shooting for 6000 Visits for the month on GA

I have averaged 318 unique visitors per day and hit 8095 unique visits for the month.

Dragon Blogger try to earn $100

I have made a total of $110 in payments for the month of October, not pending payments but actual paypal received payments.  ($17.50 from SocialSpark, $5 from PayPerPost, $87.50 from PayU2Blog)

So I had exceeded all of my goals except the number of back links, in the spirit of adjusting my goals I will set my November goals for reasonable growth.  I have seen my blog taper off quite a bit so I won’t be unrealistic.  Note each of my blogs has their own goals, and my other blogs have their own goals and income.  My personal site Justin Germino has actually started making some money as well.

  • Goals for Dragonblogger.com for November 2008.
  • 10 New Back Links
  • GA Visits Keep Average 320 per day / 9,000 Unique for the Month
  • Try to earn at least $100.00 for DragonBlogger.com
  • RealRank (Izea Rank stays < 400)
  • Alexa Rank below 200,000

Wish me luck in meeting my blog goals.
