Episode 7 Strange attractors alternated between the plot to isolate Claire by killing Gretchen, Trying to rescue Jeremy from jail and Matt Parkman facing off with Sylar’s personae inside his head.  I honestly didn’t expect Jeremy’s fate to end up the way it did, it was surprising and terribly sad, and honestly I thought it was both impressive and equally surprising how Samuel reacted when he heard the news by collapsing the entire building with the police inside.

Claire manages to save Gretchen from Becky’s clumsy attempts to end her life and even manages to injure and expose her, now that Gretchen is getting closer to Claire, I wonder if they will team up in a “one of us, one of them” type of fashion in the near future.  It is likely that Claire and Gretchen will become some type of relationship as well if things continue down the path they are heading.

Matt Parkman forced to watch as Sylar takes over his body and begins to ruin his life, Matt wisely told his wife to flee, only for her to foolishly return with his partner and they try to treat him like an AA who is back at step 1.  Unfortunately, Matt fails to dispose of Sylar’s consciousness and in fact weakens his own ability to keep him at bay by drinking himself into a near coma.  Sylar now in control is seen maniacally laughing in the hallway and my question is this:

Why isn’t Janice fleeing to the nearest country by now?  If you saw your husband maniacally laughing like that, wouldn’t you skidaddle like nobody’s business?

The show was entertaining although I thought some of the scenes were a little slower than last week and lacked as much suspense, there was a little too much predictability in the “slaughter house” and other than when Claire finally caught Becky, the rest was a little drab.  Noah seems to be on a losing streak lately, striking out and continuing to make mistakes as he tries to right his past wrongs, while Tracy is likely to join the Carnival in the near future.  I still don’t know the purpose and master goal of the carnival, once they build their family, what is their purpose?  Clearly several don’t have qualms about killing “normal people”, but Samuel particularly seems to have some sort of odd affection for others with abilities, one can only wonder what his master plans are.

TV.com voting poll shows this episode actually even out ranked last weeks Tabula Rasa, which was a 9 rating, this episode a 9.2 rating with over 30 votes.  So this episode appears to be a fan favorite so far in the Season.

Episode 6 Tabula Rasa was the highest rated episode so far of Season 4 according to TV.com with over 35 votes and an average rating of 9.5 out of 10.  It is easy to see why, this episode and the season in general are about digging into the past of the characters and helping merge the past with the present.  We see this with Noah seeking to help a teenager rediscover that he can not only kill, but still has the power to heal others like he did as a child.  Hiro discovering he forgot about Charlie and needing to go back and save her three years prior, and even Sylar recovering memories of his past including the death of his mother and all of his murdered victims.

I thought the episode was pure entertainment from the moment Peter stopped time only to realize the shotgun had blasted through his body, pieces of his own flesh and shrapnel temporarily suspended spewing from his back to when Sylar tries not to kill the police officer and instead makes a choice not to become a killer like his past.  The tension between Edgar and Sylar is palpable and the pissing match very early on as Edgar’s jealousy over Lydia’s interest in Sylar is sure to bring a showdown in the near future.

For each of the action sequences we have the magical moments of Hiro and Emma where he is like a comical Japanese Yoda trying to teach Emma to embrace her powers and not to be scared and deny them.  The fact that Hiro whisks away to save Charlie just before Peter can arrive to heal him is classic of the “almost made it” scenes with which Heroes itself is famous for.

baptize
For Sylar to be baptized into the Carnival and still be a part Nathan but in Sylar’s body with Sylar’s memories leaves it all the more interesting as we know eventually there needs to be some reconciliation with Matt Parkman and Sylar. Truly a remarkable episode and I agree with the TV.com voting that it is the best one of Heroes Season 4 so far. One final note, it seems Noah is going to be more involved with the people he tagged years ago, but this time maybe to try and help them in their lives which could also make for some interesting stories and plotlines. Noah himself has grown into a much more noble and honorable character over the years and his decision to stay with the boy who can heal or kill was very altruistic.

For a final note, they acknowledged that Claire’s blood can still “heal” people (not Hiro because it would make the tumor grow), but they still don’t make sense why they didn’t use Claire’s blood to heal Nathan Petrelli, clearly she can bring people back from the dead as her blood did with Noah in Season 2, of course the show wouldn’t be as interesting with the Sylar, Nathan, Matt dynamic then.

This episode was fun and shows how versatile Zachary Quinto is playing Sylar and his portrayal of utter confusion and amnesia was very believable.  From the moment his interrogation started happening you know it would eventually lead to some sort of telekinetic blowup and his escape.  The fact that he was shot and regenerated right in front of the female mental health expert and she knowingly helped him flee was even more fun.

The episode also focused on Peter and Emma and Peter accidentally absorbing her power and learning to slow down and see the light around him was just magical.  Though I can’t figure out the purpose of this new power, it seems that the sound/light vibrations can be used as some sort of attack seeing how Emma damaged her residence while playing a Cello, I think the connection with Emma will help Peter rediscover his Empathy again.

gretchen
Meanwhile, the whole time Gretchen was made out to be a monster, twisted Single White Female stalker and she does have a crazy infatuation with Claire but we find out there is another plot behind the scenes.  Becky reveals herself to not only be a member of the Sullivan Bros Carnival, but also that she was the killer of Annie and helped setup Gretchen to isolate Claire. Meanwhile Gretchen reveals her growing crush for Claire leading to an awkward kiss interrupted by the sorority sisters before any resolution or follow up.

We once again see that Angela is concerned over Nathan’s disappearance and has always shown lack of interest in Peter and his pursuits, The carnival crew continues to become more uneasy of Samuel and his tactics and promises and Hiro finally appears in Peter’s apartment only to collapse. The fact that Sylar is brought into the Carnival at the end of the Episode and we see glimpses of Samuel trying to help Sylar unlock his memories and potential in next weeks episode only reveal that a keg of dynamite is going to explode soon. Samuel will soon regret bringing Sylar into the fold, once he regains his memories and lust for power the carnival will be like an all you can eat buffet for abilities.

The episode had a balance of tense drama with Sylar in custody and the Gretchen/Claire plot twist, but also showed a tender side with Peter and Emma connecting over their shared ability. I found the episode to be very entertaining and the plot twist of Becky left me even surprised that I wasn’t able to guess that outcome. Again the fact that Heroes Season 4 continues to be very focused on the individual character developments and the smaller plots and stories around each character make it more enjoyable and interesting to watch than another “end of the world” plotline.

I very much am still into this Heroes Season 4 and am looking forward to the next episode which shows Noah looking for a Healer to possibly heal Hiro, Peter using Hiro’s ability, and Sylar meeting the rest of the carnival crowd.

This episode focused very specifically on Nathan Petrelli and his past as the Sylar in Nathan’s body learns what kind of man Nathan was and what dark secrets lied in his past, we are lead to see how yet another one of Nathan’s “mistakes” is covered up by his mother and he has the same Nathan guilt and remorse and is compelled to tell his former girlfriends mother that her daughter was killed rather than believe she had run away for so many years. This shows that the “Nathan” still has his faults and wrong doings, but is riddled with guilt and trying to do whats right to make up for his past. This is even more bizarre knowing that it is Sylar with just a brainwash of Nathan thoughts and memories forced into it. I especially enjoyed the discovery of the new abilities, and he thinks he unlocked some of the same power absorbing potential as Peter had. Peter has no idea that Sylar is Nathan and it will make an even more disturbing showdown when he finds out, which looks to be pretty soon based on the next episodes.

The other major section of the show takes us into Hiro’s journey to try and fix the past only to find that one of the employee’s at his company keeps making the same mistake 40+ times after Hiro goes back in time over and over to try and alter the future. Finally Hiro gives up trying to change the past and helps the person confront his issues and provides his own guidance and realizes he must himself finally tell his sister that he is dying. I thought there was a lot of touching moments with Hiro here as he started off with good and noble child like intentions only to learn a lesson that you can’t simply undo everything and that he himself needs to face a little reality. You also saw how troubled and worried Ando is for Hiro and the bond and strength of friendship between them has never been stronger.

The rest of the show focused on Tracy trying to integrate into her old life only to be bored and disinterested with being the sleazy girl of a Governor and when she tries to vie for a real position she quickly recognizes what she really is worth to her former boss. I think this is setting the stage for Tracy and Noah to partner up and reform the company, or at least team up to help Peter find the Carnival crew who tattooed him and stole the compass.

tracy

There were some scenes where Claire and Noah were sitting around trying to figure out how Noah can integrate back into life, get a job and start moving on. Claire says “Sometimes you have to look at your past, to know your future” ironically giving parental advice to her dad which was an ironic twist.

Finally we start to see that there is something going on between Lydia and Edgar and they are starting to not like the decisions that Samuel is making now that he is the “head” of the carnival crew. Still open is the mystery as to the purpose of the carnival and collection of people with abilities, also what is the significance of the compasses. I think the slower and more character focused episodes of Season 4 are a breath of fresh air and closer mimic the suspense build up of Heroes Season 1.
