This episode was very slow compared to the fast and furious previous seasons but took some time to develop Samuel (Carnival Leader’s) personality and show the complexity behind his character. A man gifted with the ability to control Earth and liquids apparently and we learned that the recent death in the crew was that of his brother who was an Empath like Peter Petrelli. (At least that is what the Carnival Crew call people with the ability to absorb and mimic other powers).

The best part of the episode however was again the showdown between Matt and Sylar where Matt spent the entire time trying to fight from using his powers only to be manipulated by Sylar. This episode confirms and proves that Sylar is not just a figment of Matt’s own mind, but part of Sylar’s psyche is indeed inside of Matt and able to use Matt’s powers and abilities.

Matt is forced to using his powers to save himself from being disgraced and in doing so he abandoned his commitment to try and stay sober. Now the only question remains on whether he will aid Sylar in recovering his body so that he can have his mind to himself again, or if he will continue to try and keep Sylar at bay. (Since Sylar can alter Matt’s perception his whole family is at risk and it is best if he were to completely get away from his family until he gets this resolved).

The Claire and Gretchen friendship became a bit predictable with Gretchen getting more insistent and close to Claire’s secrets until Claire decides to confide in her. This will lead to a huge mistake probably where Gretchen will either be jealous and try to somehow invade Claire’s life even more.

The most interesting scene was that of a new character, a deaf woman who has the ability to see sound as colored light. Though I can’t figure how this places into the story yet, it was a magical moment where she was able to see a Cello player’s instrument and create music by watching the light patterns from the sound it emitted. This was an almost artistic moment and actually had a little bit of a feel like the movie “The Soloist” a little bit. It was a very different type of scene that you normally see in the show, and Peter was taken aback by her and mesmerized watching her play.

The last bit of note was how smooth Samuel was in manipulating Peter to get close, in doing so he was able to shake Peter’s hand and transfer ink that he can control into Peter’s body. With this he formed a spinning compass on Peters forearm presumably to lead him toward the circus.

The last comment I have is I miss seeing Noah in a position of power, a man of his talents is wasted in retirement and without purpose. I hope his character gets back on his feet and finds out that catching people with abilities is what he loves to do best and he should embrace it.

In the meantime, I thought the 3rd Episode was not as strong as the opening two, but had a few interesting scenes, the best of which were Sylar/Matt and Samuel. It was quite predictable that Samuel would destroy his former home after the owners turned him away at the door, though I wish they would have budgeted the special effects to show the house being swalled by a sinkhole.

Heroes fans or haters, what did you think of the Episode?
