iUnfollow is a simple and easy to use website that allows you to quickly unfollow batches of users who are following you on Twitter.

From the dashboard you can first setup your whitelist which is recommended, this is a list of users who you will not unfollow by accident because you want to follow them no matter what.

After that you can simply click on the Unfollow button and display your followers based on two criteria:  All followers or Non-Followers.

Non-Followers will display all people you are following who are not following you back, it displays them in groups of 3 and you can hover over their names to get information about their Twitter account.  You can unfollow each batch of 3 with a single click, or skip them to look through more users to unfollow.

Because iUnfollow allows you to unfollow in batches of three it is faster to process and unfollow people than some other online accounts, but I am not sure if this meets Twitters Terms of Service as far as API call automation or not.  One thing that iUnfollow offers that most other Twitter unfollow tools does is a Statistics and History features which allow you to go back and keep track of who you unfollowed and when you unfollowed them.

The iUnfollow website is also fast and has a very appealing design interface for simplicity with no blocky advertisments or popups whatsoever.

If you are looking to find another way to unfollow batches of your Twitter followers, iUnfollow is another tool in your arsenal and is worth considering.  Remember though to avoid doing too many bulk unfollows in a day, I would recommend unfollowing no more than 300 accounts in a day.

The default is to query 30 days, but you can be more aggressive and find people who haven’t tweeted in a week, or those who haven’t tweeted in 3 months.  As somebody who pays attention to those in social media and online, I typically only follow those who are active and relevant.  30 days is a long time to not tweet and means you are likely not a business or active twitter user that will provide a steady stream of information typically.

So after logging into UnTweeps you have to give it some time to build the list of people who are declared inactive for the duration you specified.  After the entire page is finished loading you will see a button on the bottom that allows you to remove all the people you “checked” so you can unfollow them.  Twitter policy states that you have to check mark each Twitter account one at a time so there is no “check all” feature as this is a violation of the Twitter ToS.  However, there are some plugins for Firefox like CheckFox or even a bookmarklet you can use called Toggle Em All which will auto checkmark every single box on the page so you can mass unfollow the inactive Twitter users.

This makes a quick and effective way to unfollow a block of people who are inactive on Twitter but I must warn you that if you have tens of thousands of Twitter followers, you will want to filter out those inactive for 120 days first, then 90 days, then 60 days.  Too many will be listed if you do the 30 days and you should not perform more than 300 unfollows on a given day or you could put your account at risk for violating the Terms of Service.  So if you see more than 300 show up in your check mark, then I would suggest you increase the date range until you whittle the number of inactive users down to a manageable level and do a little each day instead of all at once.

UnTweeps combined with JustUnfollow are among the most useful Twitter tools for bulk unfollowing Twitter users so that you can cleanup your Tweet stream and keep your Twitter follower / following ratio at a good level.

Once you get into the system if it can handle your twitter profile you are presented with a wide range of options which include being able to see accounts that are inactive (haven’t tweeted in 30 days), Talkative, Quiet (tweet only 1x per day or less) and more.   The tool can process and unfollow up to 100 accounts at a time and has Select All buttons currently.  Now, this select all is a violation of Twitters ToS and it won’t be long before the application developer will have to remove it.  In fact, I didn’t push how many API calls per day this application can actually make, but the application could be violating Twitter Terms of Service multiple times so I don’t know how long it will exist in its current state.

It isn’t instantaneous, but it does work fairly well and quickly.  I was able to unfollow hundreds of inactive accounts that haven’t tweeted in 30 days or more with only 3 clicks.    So this tool is highly recommended for cleaning up inactive accounts from your “following list” as well as if you just want to stop following people who aren’t reciprocating so you can follow others (in case you reach your following cap).  The tool does give you the ability to deselect “verified” accounts so that you can make sure you still follow celebrities and major company accounts on twitter when doing bulk unfollowing which is a plus.

The JustUnfollow tool is simpler, and allows you to unfollow individual accounts more easily.  It also makes far fewer API calls because it only grabs the first X amount of accounts, and only processes more as you click “See More”.

I think the ManageTwitter.com tool is useful for doing bulk unfollows, but it will not stay in its current form for much longer due to violating the Twitter ToS.  I would suggest you make use of the tool quickly to cleanup your following list before you have to start manually unfollowing users one at a time again.

I was contacted by the creator of JustUnfollow.com to review their site and provide my thoughts and opinions of the service which helps you cleanup who your following on twitter. The Huitter Mutuality tool I used to use stopped working in recent months with the site completely going down so I was interested in a new tool to manage and cleanup who I was following on Twitter.

JustUnfollow is easy to use, you just hit the site and sign in with a Twitter Oath Token to see the list of people you are following who are not following you in return. You can very quickly and easily unfollow people and it unfollows them instantly.

I tested and confirmed by doing 50 unfollows in less than 1 minute. I checked to see how many followers before I started using the service and directly compared right after using the service:

The service connects to Twitter incredibly fast and is one of the fastest tools I have ever used to unfollow users who were not following me. However, it has a few limitations and some of these are deliberate for the author wants to stay in compliance with Twitter ToS. Currently the tool requires that you manually click “unfollow” for each person that you want to unfollow and though it does the actual action very quickly this still is 50 clicks.

Secondly, there is a current limit of 50 unfollows in any 24 hour period and you reach this limit very rapidly if are trying to unfollow a massive amount of accounts, which displays a popup like this:

In Summary:

Whether you have time warner internet or dial up internet service, this is the best tool I have found to help you manage the users you are following on twitter so you can clean up your follow list. It is completely free and is very fast to run through and unfollow 50 users in a day and in a week you can trim your following by 350 users if you remember to do it 7 days in a row. The developer also informed me that they plan to increase the daily unfollow limit to 100 which would also allow you to unfollow 700 accounts per week which will make it even more useful and faster.

I think the tool could use a “check all” and just auto unfollow the first 50 or 100 people checked, but I think the manual “unfollow” is what is required to stay within Twitters Terms of Service as I stated earlier. So even though it is manual it still is very fast, and the account unfollows reflect on Twitter immediately. Twitter Karma used to take quite a while to reflect when you did unfollowing with that service.

I highly recommend Just Unfollow if you are looking to trim up your list of people who you are following, it is the best pseudo Twitter bulk unfollow tool I have found.

JustUnfollow is a tool that allows you to quickly and easily unfollow twitter followers at a rate of up to 50 users a day, though they will increase to 100 unfollows per day soon.

What it doesn’t do is bulk follow people who are following you, I wish it would do that as well, I am still trying to find the best application to accomplish this. I suggest you all give “mutuality” a try and see how it works.
