A Laptop, no doubt is one of the most essential gadgets as it is light weight and portable in nature. Everyone loves to have a Laptop because of their compact design and portability. Like most of the gadgets, Laptops also have some drawbacks and problems as well, Overheating being the major one of them. Almost all Laptops overheat on continuous usage of 4-5 hours and playing high res games heats the Laptop even faster. The main cause of the overheating problems in Laptops are components like the Hard Drive, Graphics Card, Processor, etc… and you may ask, “These components are also found in Desktops, then why don’t they overheat as quickly as Laptops do?”

The answer is simple in fact. Components in Laptops are jam packed and there is very little space left for proper air circulation where as desktops have enough space for these components and space is sufficient for proper air circulation (as well as desktops typically have bigger fans and vents). I have a Laptop (Dell Inspiron N5050) which normally does not overheat for daily work which involves blogging and browsing but overheats within an hour when I play high res games like Dead Space, Dead Island, Max Payne, Spiderman 3 etc. as they require extensive use of the graphics card and processor. Using a hot Laptop can be very uncomfortable and the system can start running sluggish from the components heating up as well.

Here are Some Methods Which I Use to Cool my Laptop:

Don’t go on the name

Though it is called a Laptop, the worst place for a Laptop is on the lap. Keeping it on the lap blocks the air vents in the Laptop, causing the air to circulate less freely and reports say that if a pregnant woman keeps Laptop on her lap, she is endangering her self and possibly the fetus, and for men it can lead to reduction of sperm count due to the heat spreading into the bodies reproductive areas.

Avoid using Laptop on Carpets, Beds and Pillows

Keeping Laptop on soft surfaces like Cushions, Carpets, Beds and Pillows block the air vents in the Laptop. If you want to use it on Beds and Carpets, prefer to use a Hardboard and keep the Laptop on it.

Consider buying a Cooling Pad or Chill Mat

Cooling Pads or Chill Mats are introduced to avoid extensive damage to internal parts of Laptop due to over heating. A typical Cooling Pad consists of one or two fans and a rubber support for elevation. By using a Cooling pad, Laptop users can reduce the problems caused by overheating to a large extent.

Maintenance

Make a habit of cleaning the Laptop at least once in a week to remove clogged dirt and dust particles inside the air vents of the Laptop. Purchasing a can of compressed air can be really useful to clean the air vent and other internal parts of the Laptop.

Monitor the Temperature

Programs like Speed Fan can help to monitor voltages, temperatures and fan speeds in Laptops.

Let the Laptop rest

As you feel tired and exhausted after working for a couple of hours, the same goes for your Laptop. Allow it to cool down by giving it some rest. It is better to keep the Laptop in front of Cooler or Table Fan.

Use the Laptop on Power Saver Mode

The Power Saving Mode in Laptop manages sets the brightness and other settings to save power as well as to reduce the processes, there by preventing the Laptop from Overheating.

What do you think about these methods? Do you use any of them? Did I miss any other methods to cool a Laptop? If yes, then I would love to hear from you

There are several exciting keyboard shortcuts in Microsoft’s Windows 7 Ultimate that many computers users are not aware of. Learning just a few of them can make your online experience much faster and simpler.

Windows Magnifier

For example, Win key + spacebar shows you the Windows 7 Ultimate desktop via Aero Peek, making open windows transparent and allowing you to see it without closing or minimizing them, Win + Up maximizes the current window you’re currently working with, Win + Down minimizes it, Win + Right/Left moves it right or left, Win + + opens up the Windows magnifier and zooms in and Win + – out. Ctrl + Shift + Click opens all your programs from both the taskbar and Start menu.

Windows 7 Mobile Gadgets

In Windows 7 Ultimate, instead of them being confined to the sidebar on the right side of your computer screen, gadgets are completely mobile across the desktop. In addition, the taskbar at the bottom of the desktop has a “jump list” giving you easy access to your programs, ranked by most recent use. For example, if you have carried out a number of searches using Google, right clicking the icon will display the most recent ones.

Windows 7 Pin Items

One of the most useful aspects of Windows 7 is that it allows you to select any program or item and “pin” it by right clicking it and choosing “Pin to Taskbar”. This makes it a lot quicker to open that program or item when you next want to use it. Programs and items that have been “pinned” are also included on “jump lists” on the taskbar at the bottom of the taskbar.

As you can see, the launch of Windows 7 in general and Windows 7 Ultimate in particular represents a major breakthrough in adaptable, mobile and user-friendly web-operating systems. This mobility is especially true when it comes to the system tray where you can move all the icons around until they are just where you want them.

Have you ever wanted to install a game or a software from a friend’s PC but could not proceed because the setup or backup file for the game or software are too large to be transferred into your USB pen drive or into your phone’s SD Card? If yes, then File Splitter is a great solution for helping you deal with files that are too large by helping you split them into smaller parts and then combine them later on.File Splitter is a program which works without being installed on the computer. It can be used to split a large file into small parts or chunks and join the small parts back again. So, you may use File Splitter to split the setup or backup file of your favorite game or software and transfer its chunks to your pen drive or SD card and then merge the entire file again on your PC. The source file is kept intact with no changes, this means you literally can break a multi-gig .exe file into multiple parts and recombine them.

Splitting a Large File with File Splitter

By following the steps below, you can split a file of any type (regardless of the file size) into small chunks.

Step 1: First we need to open File Splitter Application (.exe) and click on “Split File” tab.

Step 2: Choose the Source File by clicking on ‘Browse’ button. File Splitter can split almost all types of files irrespective of the file size.

Step 3: Choose the Destination Folder, where the application will save all the chunk files. For example, if your source file was “thesecretworld.exe”, then the application will create files which will be named as “thesecretworld.exe.chunk001″, “thesecretworld.exe.chunk002″, “thesecretworld.exe.chunk003″ etc. depending on the size you selected for each chunk.

Merging small chunks back with File Splitter

By following the steps below, you can merge small chunks of the respective file to form the original file you split.

Step 1: Click on the “Join Files” tab.

Step 2: Choose the Source Chunk by clicking on ‘Browse’ button. You can specify any chunk from the list as the source. File Splitter will recognize all the other chunks automatically.

Step 3: Choose the Destination File. Please keep in mind to name the destination file exactly with the same file format. For example, the file you splitted was “thesecretworld.exe”. Then the destination file name must also be “thesecretworld.exe”. Don’t forget to add the extension also! If the file name and format is not given correctly, then the program will join the files but the format would be “.File” which is unreadable by Windows.

Operating Systems supported by File Splitter

Anyone who uses the internet should be aware of the many dangers that can easily trip up the unwary online. It has to be said though that even today there are many users of the internet who have very little understanding of online security issues and are putting themselves and their computer at serious risk every time they log on. The first thing to understand when it comes to online security is the difference between a firewall and anti-virus protection.

In the early days of the internet, people saw it solely as a tool to share information and very little thought was given as to how its openness might be exploited by the criminal or merely mischievous. As a result, very few computers, whether at home or in a corporate environment, included built-in security features. The entry points to the online network were protected by computer companies and this was felt to be sufficient protection for users. Since then of course we have learnt that these networks are not as secure against those intent on hacking into them to distribute viruses or launch cyber attacks, hence the need to install firewalls and anti-virus protection.

Appliance-based firewalls are those installed on a stand-alone appliance with several computer connections or built into a shared household router. When your computer is connected to internet via a local network, the firewall will filter all incoming and outgoing traffic, protecting you against cyber attacks and malicious software. It also makes sure that if malware is installed on your computer via the internet it is blocked from connecting back to the server it was sent from.

Unlike the firewall installed on a PC which acts to stop viruses connecting to your computer via its internet connection, anti-virus software protects it against viruses which are transmitted in emails, downloads, peer-to-peer transfers, plug-and-play appliances like MP3 players, flash drives and memory cards. Anti-virus software protects you against these dangers by running in the background, monitoring your computer for anything that looks suspicious.

Computer security is not just a question of firewalls and anti-virus software. You also need anti-malware software to protect your computer against spyware contained in cookies and websites attempting to attack it. You can now buy anti-virus and anti-spyware security solutions which are bundled together in one package. The best way to protect your computer is with a network router that has a built-in firewall together with an application-based firewall and then add anti-virus and anti-spyware software.

Dragon Blogger’s Note:

For free choices in spyware/anti-virus I personally use Microsoft Security Essentials combined with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware the two combined provide excellent protection at no cost for Windows operating systems.

There is more choice than ever before when it comes to picking an internet browser that meets your business and home computing needs. Selecting the best one for you will depend on what device you are going to be using the internet browser on and what you are going to be using it for.

Google is pinning its hopes for a bigger share of the internet browser market on Google Chrome and is aggressively pushing it to consumers. At the same time, Mozilla is improving its Firefox browser and Microsoft its Internet Explorer. When it comes to mobile browsers for smartphones and tablets, Opera and Apple are coming out with some exciting new products too.

So which is the best browser for you?

When it comes to speed, the top browsers – IE9, Safari 5.1, Firefox 9, Chrome 16 and Opera 11.6 – all deliver high-speed browsing but there are differences when it comes to things such as JavaScript performance which affects the speed at which web apps and more complex websites work. Looking at JavaScript performance, Firefox is the clear leader, completing speed tests in an impressive 189.4ms, followed by Safari in 219.6ms, IE9 in 247.9ms, Opera in 254.3ms and Chrome in 291ms (all these performance figures are based on running a new computer without any of the plug-ins or extensions that can dramatically reduce the speed of your internet browser).

Talking of add-ons, your best choice for the number of add-ons available is Firefox. It is by some distance the most adaptable and expandable web browser with add-ons including ad blockers, Twitter interfaces and Gmail. Opera is another contender because of the way it integrates email, newsgroups and online chat and sidebar tabs for games and apps.

Many people are now looking for the best browser for mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. As you’d expect, for Android devices the Android browser is a good bet but for smartphones Opera Mobile has a slight edge. With tablets, the standard Android browser just about edges out its competitors. Apple’s Safari browser has improved massively for in its performance on their iPad device, now featuring tabbed browsing and iCloud syncing on the iPad 2 and iPad 3. It’s not only faster but much more reliable than using non-Apple browsers on your iPad.

As you can see, which internet browser you decide to buy very much depends on what you intend to use it for – games, apps, email, online chat – and the device you will be running it on.
