Testing Kontera On a Few Blogs

Posted by: dragonblogger  //  Category: blogging

I have heard of several other bloggers making good money with Kontera which is a text link ad service similar in concept to Adsense, except it actually turns some of your keywords into advertisement links rather than keeping the advertisement content to a specific area. Now before you are considering using Kontera, know this most paid blogging companies including PayU2Blog, SocialSpark and PayPerPost do not support or allow their bloggers to use Kontera. They don’t allow advertising links inside of posts that are already sponsored posts, this is a conflict of interest.

Hence I have enabled Kontera on two blogs that don’t use PayU2Blog or IZEA companies, just to test the income earning potential. My sites average about 300 visits per day between the two of them, so I am curious to see if Kontera will earn me as much as Adsense. There is a Kontera WordPress Plug-in which allows you to turn off Kontera for specific posts, or only enable it for posts older than 30 days or whatever you choose. You can choose to enable Kontera only for posts, pages or comments. I should tell you to download the Kontera WordPress 2.8 plug-in directly from Kontera, the one hosted on wordpress.org does not support changing color of text link ad, and is outdated.

Technically if this plug-in functions properly, it means you should be able to customize Kontera so it doesn’t violate PayU2Blog or IZEA’s terms of service since you can disable it for the posts that are sponsored. I may have to test it and see if it works, but the question remains as follows:

  • Do you see Kontera as being more intrusive than AdSense on a blog?
  • Does Kontera devalue or deface your blog to see contextual link ads on your blog post?
  • How much would it have to earn before you considered using it?   Would you change your mind and use Kontera if you earned $1000 per month or more from it?

Let me know your thoughts readers, I have not enabled Kontera for Dragon Blogger, I want your comments and feedback.

I had Kontera running on one of my blogs for quite a while, but I made more from Google, so I removed it, but I suppose with a high amount of traffic it would be worth seeing if it does improve an income ;)

I had SnapShots on my blog for a day, and got comments like, “Nice blog, but the links are tacky” and they weren’t even ADS! LOL – I think they’re a turn-off, personally.

I kind of like Google ads, though they’re better in GMail than on any blog I’ve seen (probably because the ads are relevant to ME, based on the content of my emails, and not to the blogger, based on the content of his posts). I played around with this in the early days of GMail, and it planned my vacation get-away for me in detail. I don’t mind ads if they’re not intrusive, or they’re really fun and interesting, or they’re really relevant and useful to me. But the rest are just…ugly.

How many emails to you send out that you embed Google Ads in gmail? I agree, normally I don’t like the extra text links showing the double underlines, but I am also not sure I like 25% of my blog post tied up with a Google AD either. I will give it a 30 day trial, if it nets me more than Adsense in the same period of time, then it is worth it, if it earns nothing, then I can remove it. At least is easy to turn on and off. Thanks for giving your experience and point of view.

I tried out Kontera too but I never got it to work, despite waiting for it a week to “gather data” – their support wasn’t so helpful either, so I gave up. Installed Infolinks instead and it worked in a matter of hours.

I googled a lot of reviews on the two and it seems both of them are making pretty much the same amount of money, infolinks sometimes a bit more, but I guess it depends on the blog and readers too.

I don’t find it too obtrusive. At my site, I use a double-underline for those links, so people will know what they are.

I also think it requires a good amount of traffic to benefit from it. I’ve had 5400 impressions so far, 54 clicks and made $1.73, so it’s hardly worth the effort of potentially annoying your readers.

I might remove it again for a month or three while I try to better my traffic and then bring it back on. Downside is, introducing ads *later* could have negative effect on your readers, while if they become readers while ads are already on the site, they won’t mind them (too much).

I also have a SocialSpark (IZEA, I think?) ad on my page that’s PPC and I didn’t know they didn’t wanted infolinks text links. I guess if I start doing some “paid posts” for them eventually, I’d just remove infolinks from those posts.

Right, I will enable it and see. If it earns less than AdSense after a month I may remove it.

In my opinion link ads inside your article is intrusive and annoying. Your readers will think its a link you’ve put in but they will disappointed if they found out that its an ad.

Thanks, I am testing it for 30 days, if I don’t think its worth it, or too many people complain I will remove. I also promote and test blog products on this blog so I can report to other bloggers, if I don’t give it a proper run, I can’t accurately write a review of the product/service.

Personally I don’t like Kontera ads, they can be a bit annoying within the content like that. From what I’ve heard from other sources as well – it doesn’t do as well as adsense – and people have a tendency to get more annoyed with it vs. adsense.

So far after a 1 day run it earned 20% as much as Adsense on the same day, so going to give it 30 days, if it doesn’t earn close to AdSense I will pull it probably.

I just think that Kontera ads and the things like it just make your site look a little too ad oriented. Yes, google ads are not annoying and are not in your way when you try to read the content, but in that they generate more interested clicks than accidental and probably are better for advertisers, thus they are probably going to pay better.
