My First Time Using WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plug-In
I had downloaded the “WordPress Automatic Upgrade” Plug-in because I did want to simplify wordpress upgrades since I had never done one previously.
I had this plug-in installed for the last 2 weeks without needing to use it, well today when logging into my dashboard I saw that wordpress 2.6.2 was available for upgrade.
The top of my wordpress dashboard said I could do an automatic upgrade or a manual upgrade, so I chose to try an automatic upgrade.
The beauty of this plug-in is it walks you through every step of the way, I should also note that most steps you can skip if you want to speed things up even faster, but I wouldn’t recommend skipping the backups.
- Step 1 – Backing up your wordpress files
When you first click Next, the plug-in backs up your wordpress files, then has you confirm the zip file by downloading it and making sure your content is intact. Â I downloaded the zip file to my computer and opened it up and noticed all of my files were there, minus my theme files.
- Step 2 – Backup your wordpress database tables
When you click next step after the backup of your wordpress files, the plug-in then backs up your wordpress database tables, and lets you select additional tables.
I will be honest, I let it select the default tables, I had no clue what the additional tables were for and didn’t have time to research.
- Step 3 – It then puts your site in Maintenance mode
This was really nice, when you perform the next step your site changes to say it is down for maintenance. Â Which is a nice touch, I didn’t know how long this would take, so I put my site in maintenance mode.
- Step 4 – Download the latest wordpress files
The plug-in then downloads the latest files from WordPress.org, but it also gives you the option to select a different location.
- Step 5 – Disabling all other plug-ins
To help avoid catastrophe from plug-ins this plug-in disables all other plug-in’s prior to the upgrade except for itself.
- Step 6 – Upgrade WordPress
Now when you click next step, your wordpress files get replaced with latest version.
- Step 7 – Validate your site works after upgrade.
The plug-in has a separate link so you can open your wordpress site to make sure it renders properly (minus the plug-ins being enabled at this point). Â Â This also removes the “Maintenance Mode” from your site.
- Step 8 – Re-Enable all your other plug-ins
Now all your plug-ins that you had enabled are re-enabled.
- Step 9 – Test your Web Site
Test your blog site to make sure it renders properly and without issue on various browsers. Â This actually is my step, and not a step in the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plug-in.
- Step 10 – Clean up your Backup Files
The plug-in reminds you to clean up your backed up files each time you log into your Dashboard until you do. Â I personally will wait a few days before I clean up my backup files.
- Summary
This was a flawless upgrade process that took me literally 3 minutes to completely upgrade WordPress from 2.6.1 to 2.6.2, I could not have been happier with the simplicity and ease of use of this plug-in.
This plug-in works exactly as designed and impressed me enormously, as soon as I get some money from blogging, I am sure to make a contribution to Keith D. Souza from http://techie-buzz.com/ who authored and created this WordPress Plug-in.
I highly recommend this plug-in to anybody who wants to simply and easily upgrade their wordpress without hassle.
