Aug 082012

July 2012 was a hard month for me personally, there were numerous family health issues that prevented me from being able to do blogging for much of the month.  If it wasn’t for the fact that in early July I hired about 5 more writers and I am now up to 11 writers for the site, I would have had gaps in posts as I couldn’t contribute nearly that many articles myself in July 2012 compared to previous months.

This means I was unable to accept and apply for sponsored opps in SocialSpark and other platforms and my income level dropped quite a bit as a result.  Fortunately I managed to make some up in WordPress services toward the end of the month and Amazon and Google AdSense alone provide a fair cushion of passive income though AdSense is down due to my site traffic being down from previous months.

July 2012 Traffic for DragonBlogger.com

So from my snapshot of some analytics pages you can see in July my site had 45,322 unique visitors which is about 10k less than the previous month.  You can see the ratio of search traffic is still in the 70% range  but one interesting thing is StumbleUpon which was my #1 traffic referrer for the past 20 months now dropped to #6 (thousands of visits per month gone, and Facebook is now my #1 traffic referrer).  This shows that with around 5,500+ Facebook fans and 2400+ friends on Facebook, it has more drawing power than my 14k+ followers on Twitter.

You can see my top 10 articles vary across entertainment, gadgets, and gaming so I have a pretty good mix of varying content in my top 10.

July 2012 EarningS

image thumb1 Traffic and Earnings Report for July 2012

July 2012 saw slightly more earnings than June 2012 but around 50% less earnings than my all time high of $1300 for May of 2012.  I was not nearly as active in July as previous months and this cost me some income.  I did manage to do some WordPress services which earned me $215 and was a lot of work during a few Sunday/Monday nights.

AdSense is still the largest single income factor though is down about 20% from the previous month as the traffic diminishes, there were various other ways I make money online and they all contributed a little bit to bring my total income to $749.46 for July 2012 which means after paying my blogging expenses I had $628.92 net profit.

But don’t think I keep that money, in the first week of August already I paid more than $400 in blogging expenses ($300+ to writers) so very little of it is kept as true profit, it just rolls to cover expenses the following month.

In Summary

Though DragonBlogger.com had 65 articles published in July 2012 it still suffered a loss of income due to my being absent a good portion of the month to handle some family health issues and a vacation in early July.  The good thing is that my site earned almost all of it’s income passively, if I did 0 work on my blogs, I probably make about $300 in a single month just from AdSense and Amazon Affiliate on older articles which is good.

I intend to ramp up heavily in August and plan on focusing more on social media promotions as well as building quality backlinks to help improve my Alexa and hopefully regain some PageRank if Google will reconsider and stop punishing me for testing Intellilinks and Teliad last year.

Social Spark which tends to have great opportunities was dry in July 2012 and I had to estimate the Social Spark Ads income as their charts were down, but still they earn more than a BuySellAds slot in the same spot.

Traffic and Earnings Report for July 2012

Hey Justin congrats on the earnings. I hope sales continue to grow for you. We both know it’s a lot of work and effort to really make money online. But we both continue to work daily at it I’m sure we will see more profits sooner than later.

@bbrian017 Thanks, yep it is funny how closely my income ties to traffic, on months where my visits go above 100k my income is about 35-40% higher than it is now, so traffic appears to be key to income growth at least for my site.

These figures are quite excellent considering the fact that you were unavailable for some time in July 2012. Congrats :)

@pavanbawdane Thanks Pavan, it is really good that I have a stable $200 per month average earnings in AdSense, this is kind of like my foundation income.  The affiliate sales and sponsored reviews are icing and come and go in various waves.  The key is to make sure I can bring in enough income to keep all my writers paid, continue to put some income toward advertising/contests and promotion and still keep a net profit amount that justifies all the work I do for the sites.

The numbers are really big if you ask me. I can only dream this amount of traffic and earnings per month @Dragon Blogger

    • http://www.dragonblogger.com/ Dragon Blogger

@techblazes Thanks, that is why I try to keep things into perspective.  I realize that this traffic is down about 30% from previous high months, income is down about 60% from my highest months, but it is still more than many bloggers make so can’t really be so distraught about it.

Hi! This monthly series that you do has been one of my favorites to read – there aren’t many bloggers out there who disclose this much information and it’s nice to have someone who does. With that in mind there’s been one question that’s bugged me from the time I started reading this series….

Have you had any thoughts on how to improve your return visitors?

You seem to generate a pretty steady flow of search engine traffic, but each month you’re posting ~90% new visitors, which seems like a lot. If you could retain some of that 45k I’d imagine you’d be able to not only grow your site’s traffic, but you’d have that safe base of loyal readers for when search traffic drops off as well as being able to more directly promote to your regular readers.

I mean judging by these numbers (and I’m talking over the last several months here) you’re core reader base is only a few thousand people. Imagine if you could grow that to a few ten thousand?

I’d wonder if you had thought of ways to do this, or even tried some methods out. The main reason I ask is because as I grow my search traffic I’m looking for ways to retain them as loyal readers so I could grow my base with my search traffic at the same time.

Hope to hear some thoughts! :)

@John Davenport You make a good point and here is my take on this from doing this the last 4 years.  By the way, for some reason I had to rescue your comment from SPAM in LiveFyre so just saw it today.Because my blog hits so many different topics, Movie Reviews, Games, Tech, Blogging, WordPress…etc the target for any one audience has little interest in the other categories.  I see this because for every 6 subscribers to my mailing list, 3 – 4 unsubscribe within 3 days due to the # of articles we have that cross topics.Because this site is a portal site and not a niche site, my fans are silo’d into specific categories but don’t get a huge number that follow every category.  I do have separate RSS feeds for each category but few people take the time to click and sign up only for the category that interests them.

@Dragon Blogger Well don’t worry I actually just left it today so it wasn’t a long wait :)

I guess that does make a lot of sense. Now that you mentioned it I typically will only come here to read about your blogging activities and some of your technology stuff, but I don’t really care about your movie or game reviews or things of that matter.

Anyways thanks for the response! :)

@John Davenport You perfectly illustrated my point :)

Congrats on the earnings for this month. I always appreciate it when bloggers openly share stats; it really helps. Thanks!

    • http://www.dragonblogger.com/ Dragon Blogger

I always share so other bloggers can see what is a reasonable earnings from what I put in, there are bloggers who make much more than I do with less traffic but it tends to require a niche focus and affiliate sales to have decent income.

  • http://www.inspiretothrive.com/ lisabuben290

That is great that you can still monetize the blog without working on it daily. I love seeing how others are able to monetize their blogs.

    • http://www.dragonblogger.com/ Dragon Blogger

@lisabuben290 Even better to me is how I have grown this blog to where I hired 10 freelance writers who contribute to the site and can pay writers while still making a profit from the site for myself.  This helps me work less hours on the site and still earn from it.

  • http://avgjoegeek.net/ avgjoegeek

That is insanely good! Well coming from my lil’ blog that squeaks by the $13.00 dollar mark in adsense :-)

    • http://www.dragonblogger.com/ Dragon Blogger

@avgjoegeek May was my all time high in the last 4 years http://www.dragonblogger.com/blog-earnings-report-2012/ when I see last months and compare it to may I get disappointed, but remember the fact that I only do this part time as a hobby.
