Instead of just a normal sluggish day from too much traffic on twitter, this morning on August 6th Twitter.com officially was slammed with a DOS attack that disabled the site for several hours.  Twitter posted several updates on their status blog and mentioned they have recovered but were still under attack which is causing the network to almost be completely unusable as tweets fail to send and updates fail to work.

Ongoing denial-of-service attack 2 hours ago

We are defending against a denial-of-service attack, and will update status again shortly.

Update: the site is back up, but we are continuing to defend against and recover from this attack.

Update (9:46a): As we recover, users will experience some longer load times and slowness. This includes timeouts to API clients. We’re working to get back to 100% as quickly as we can.

I wonder if they will report who and what caused the DOS attack when all is recovered and figured out.
