So with running seven blogs now and using experimental and SEO enhancing wordpress plug-ins I was causing my blog sites to choke the limited amount of RAM I had available to me under my current shared hosting plan.  Where your processes are killed if they start consuming too much memory, and this was leading to averages of about 3-5 hours of site down time on my various blogs over the past several months.  In an effort to resolve the issue I have upgraded my shared hosting plan to VPS which is Virtual Private Hosting, where I get a dedicated amount of RAM and CPU to my web sites and can grow as I need it.  This plan comes with a hefty price tag though because in addition to the around $6 per month price of my hosting, I now pay an additional $1 per 10MB of RAM usage, so I probably will average a hosting fee of $21 per month now.

I am hoping to get greater stability and flexibility as a result of being privately hosted, but I also have to be aware and try not to let my costs and usages skyrocket out of control which will take more performance monitoring and tweaking of my blog plug-ins and such.

One big issue I had is a massive blog outage on all blogs that underwent the conversion, this cost me several hours of downtime across many blogs.  What appeared to be the problem is that the web sites were moved but their connections to the MySQL databases were either not moved, or improperly setup.  This was causing errors for all of my wordpress blogs created prior to the VPS conversion including my flagship blog DragonBlogger.com.

Fortunately those issues are resolved and I hope to see greatly improved performance and availability in my blogs now that I am using a private hosting plan.  If I do not see greater availability, I will look for a different high quality vps host in the future.
