I saw the movie trailer to the movie Watchmen for the first time while watching Batman: The Dark Night and I must say I am incredibly impressed by the trailer itself. The computer animation looks outstanding, the dramatic display of the characters leaves me speechless and the background song by Smashing Pumpkins sounds so appropriate.
I didn’t think the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a bad movie, but it could have been done so much better. Watchmen for those of you who don’t know is one of the Graphic Novels by Alan Moore and published by DC comics in the 1986 – 1987 years. There were 12 issues which were released and the story for the comics is set in the 1980′s in an alternate reality.
Though in the comic books there was less focus on superheroes, in fact they were outlawed in 1977 there being only one superhero called Doctor Manhattan who had nuclear powers and was based off of Captom Atom from Marvel Comics.
Here is the movie trailer let me know what you all think:

I think that without a doubt they are going to screw this movie up for the comic fans. It almost always happens and taking on a classic like this one is going to make the comic fans scrutinize it far more than it should.
Still, that’s why I’m not reading my copy of it until after the movie. Because as a movie, it looks like it’s going to be absolutely amazing.
Incidentally, have you read the comic before? Because I highly recommend it. Though if you’re going to see the movie, then read it after you see it. After all, the book is always better and no need to jeopardize your movie experience.

I did read the comics, and I liked them very much. The movie trailer already looks like they may be taking a way different twist than the comics. When a movie comes out I try to treat the movie as a separate entity based in the same universe as the book or comic it supposedly mirrors. This way I don’t analyze to see what they got right or wrong, but I can enjoy the movie for what it is a Movie similar but not an exact reproduction of the written work. I agree if people can’t separate out that, they should see movie first, then read the book.
Dreamcatcher was an example of a great Stephen King book that didn’t translate into a movie that well.

I definitely need to check this out next year. I always enjoy good animation and effects in movies, being a movie editor myself.
