Personal computer users have only their own information and networks to protect which in theory would make the risk lower and the capability to provide protection easier in theory if everyone were to ensure they followed stricter standard when setting up home wireless networks and using clean/safe browsing and email habits. Corporations have a lot more at stake when it comes to keeping their security networks safe and making sure they address 4 Fatal Gaps in their security network is critical. These four gaps include the following:

Threat Management

Being able to understand, respond to and anticipate threats against your network, devices and data.  This requires an unprecedented level of adaptability as threats are changing form all the time and new risks and vulnerabilities are always being discovered.  Knowing how to effectively respond to an attack, penetration is just as critical, once you discover you are attacked you need to know the steps to take while it is going on.

Mobility and Always On Security

Mobile devices are already the next big security risk and this will only increase over time.  The ability to have remote access is a boon and a bane to the IT world and making sure you can protect and quarantine mobile devices, application layers within devices as well as preventing them from accessing the network should the mobile devices become comprised.  Stats show 10% of all laptops and mobile devices end up stolen, you need to account for this statistic and have security measures in place.

Data Loss Prevention

Being able to monitor sensitive data and where it flows in and out of your network is key to preventing leakage of critical information and could help avoid legal and financial damage.  It isn't good enough just to prevent outsiders from coming into your network, you need to monitor and keep track of what information and data is being sent outside of your network from the inside.

Cloud Security

The cloud is pervasive and only growing, keeping information and data secure in the cloud as well as keeping the cloud itself secure is a growing challenge.  There may be one, two, ten or more clouds inside and outside your networks that you interface with.

This is but a small overview of the 4 fatal gaps in network security and you can watch this video to see more.

CDW also offers this Data Loss Prevention PDF and a free security assessment that can help determine where you may have gaps in your security.

If I were running any type of offering that required storing data of any sort that could compromise customers, making sure I had appropriate security and data loss prevention solutions in place would be one of my top priorities.

Nice post! It is important to know the problems with your network! Security must always be top priority. People seem to neglect it because they think that “they are not that valuable to be hacked” but there is a whole community out there looking for targets.. So don’t neglect security gaps!
