Wordpress releases these point releases to close up security vulnerabilities and help keep the wordpress application more secure and stable. The latest fix Wordpress 2.8.6 addresses vulnerabilities with sites who have multiple authors where a contributing author can gain more access than they should have on your blog. It also closes up some cross site scripting vulnerabilities where uploaded files can be exploited to gain malicious access to your blog.
Make sure you backup your blog first and upgrade Wordpress to 2.8.6 as soon as possible. I have already upgraded all 8 of the blogs that I administrate and have not seen any issues, all plug-ins appear to work without problems.

I was just talking about this somewhere else. I’m kind of afraid to upgrade because when I do things like certain plugins and whatnot stop working. Takes a while for some things to catch up to the constant Wordpress updates!
That said, I’m glad they are keeping on top of things.

I did a clean install of 2.8.6 and I am having category problems. I add new categories and when i write a post there is no catagory to post them in. When i go to the sidebar it does not list the various catagories under the catagory heading. I would be hesitant to upgrade my other blogs to 2.8.6 till i know what is causing this problem.

I have not created any new categories since upgrading to 2.8.6, I would try adding a category then checking your wordpress SQL table to see if it exists there, if it does it may be an Admin GUI thing, if it doesn’t wordpress may not be able to write new category entries to the SQL table.
