7mm Thick Laptop Hard Drives

In an article over on Geeky-Gadgets.com I just read about Hitachi unveiling a 7mm thick laptop hard drive for netbooks, notebooks and laptops.

The Travelstar Z7K320 hard drive will be the first hard drive of this size that spins at 7200 RPM and supports the SATA 3Gbps transfer rates.

According to the stats the drive uses just 1.8 watts of power during operation and just under a watt when idle.

The drive will also come with 16mb of cache and will have a storage capacity of 320GB in size.

A drive of this size could easy be used for portable gaming consoles, iPad or other devices in the future and help drive the size of notebooks and laptops down.

I am waiting for a finger nail sized hard drive disk that can spin at 7200mb and store 1TB of data. I mean all of this data storage is only going to mean that people are going to store every single thing they take a picture of or download and create serious digital pack rat like conditions. Seriously, I am going to look for the best laptop deals I can find when they make laptops that are even smaller and more portable thanks to having a drive with a smaller footprint.
