Is Hollywood truly so out of ideas that they have to remake everything from the last 20-30 years? With many of the movies which have come out in the last year or so, and upcoming, it certainly seems like it. Or have directors and writers become so lazy they don’t want to try something new? Sure taking a gamble is scary but come on Hollywood, this remaking of movies is getting, well old.

In the last few years we have seen remakes of Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Karate Kid, Arthur, Fame, Clash of the Titans, Footloose, Fright Night, Conan, Star Trek, and Spiderman. Recently Total Recall came out and I read today that Red Dawn is due in November. The majority of these are from the 80’s, which might be why Hollywood thinks it is ok to remake them, but not all of them. In the case of Spiderman I really have to protest because the remake with Toby McGuire is just from ten years ago!

I have seen several of the remakes above, never in the theaters though so Hollywood isn’t getting my money that way. Some have been decent and some terrible. Either way I have been disappointed because the originals were good on their own. It probably is also because they are childhood memories which are being ruined. I don’t really care that we have better technology and special effects now then when they were made, that’s not the point of them (or at least to me it’s not).

Now I understand that Hollywood has taken ideas from books for years and created wonderful movies from them; Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz come to mind as the oldest, with more recent ones being Hunger Games and the Twilight series. Now before I get blasted about Twilight by all the haters, let me say that while it may not be what you like, it is at least original by Hollywood standards.

What really irks me about all this is an article I just read which has 50 movies Hollywood is remaking. Yes you heard me right, 50! Some of them I have never heard of before but most I have and a remake just makes me want to scream. Especially when some of them are: Judge Dredd, Annie, Mad Max, The Never Ending Story, Dirty Dancing, Evil Dead, and Barbarella. I shudder to see what Evil Dead and Barbarella will look like especially since both are cult classics. Honestly what’s next The Rocky Horror Picture Show?
So I really think that Hollywood has gotten lazy when it comes to making movies. Give me something new and different (like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter). Let go of the woobie and take a chance Hollywood. Otherwise, you just might remake yourself out of a business.

I have been a gamer for over 20 years. My preference is RPG, fighter, action, adventure, defense, and strategy although I will play just about anything. I also prefer console to PC gaming. Depending on what interests me, I watch TV and movies. Some things every week or when its new and others as they catch my fancy. Here I prefer dramas, fantasy, sci-fi, and action. I also am an avid reader and writer.
