I had the chance to watch Scary Movie 6 in theaters. I thought it was pretty interesting that a large part of the original cast came back. However, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the very low score it received from Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews online were also very mixed, so I decided to go and experience it for myself.
I do not want to get too deep into spoilers. I mean, obviously this is a movie that heavily leans into nostalgia. In fact, I think that despite all the negative reviews, people still went to see it precisely because of that nostalgia factor and because it brings back the cast from the first Scary Movie films.
There are a lot of old-school characters like Cindy Campbell, Brenda Meeks, Shorty Meeks, and Ray Wilkins, along with other familiar faces such as Doofy Gilmore, Bobby Prinze, Gail Hailstorm, and Greg Phillippe. Some of them, like Bobby, have very little screen time, but they are still there and I think that is great for fans of the original movies.
The story makes no sense
This is my biggest criticism. I think the story does not make much sense because yes, there is a Ghostface trying to kill Cindy, or at least that seems to be what is happening for most of the movie, but the story constantly shifts in different directions every chance it gets.
For example, the characters talk and joke about Scary Movie itself and about how the original cast was needed, which honestly felt a bit boring to me. That said, I have to admit there are some really funny scenes, like the White Chicks reference. But once again, the story quickly moves away from what seems to be the main plot.
The ending is one of the worst I have seen because once again they talk about the future of Scary Movie instead of focusing on the actual story. Also, there are multiple Ghostfaces, meaning multiple killers, which was another thing I did not like because it takes away from the whole surprise killer concept.
Kai Cenat’s appearance was pretty funny in my opinion, so once again, the movie has a lot of funny moments. But my criticism is not about whether it made me laugh or not, it is about the consistency of the story. It feels like they tried to force certain scenes, and I think that works against the movie because some scenes that were supposed to be funny simply were not.
I completely understand that Scary Movie is not a film with a traditional storyline, but rather a type of social commentary and parody of other movies. Still, this felt a bit below the expectations the Wayans brothers created for me.
According to them, there may be a seventh Scary Movie movie. I honestly do not know if I would go watch it if that happens, but I hope they improve the writing. I am pretty sure a lot of online critics feel similarly, but every opinion is different and many people may have loved it.
My score for Scary Movie 6 is 4/10. It was fun, but like I said, the story did not really win me over.
