Why Are All Brands Looking the Same?

You've probably noticed that over the years, many brands have redesigned their logos and overall appearance using a minimalist style, which basically means keeping things simpler. However, minimalism hasn't just taken over logos. It's also become a major trend in the architecture and interior design of many buildings, including restaurants.

Why Is Minimalism Everywhere?

It can be a little confusing because brands used to have much more distinctive designs. Each one had a unique look that made it instantly recognizable. Today, many companies have moved toward cleaner, simpler logos, while their buildings and interiors have been redesigned to feel more modern, comfortable, and professional.

Take McDonald's as an example. Years ago, it was mostly seen as a place where families and children gathered. Today, many McDonald's locations have been redesigned to feel like places where someone can grab a meal while continuing to work on a laptop.

Just think about it yourself. If you had to choose a place to finish some office work, would you pick the old-style restaurant or the newer one? Most people would probably choose the newer design because it feels modern and gives the impression of being a quieter, more comfortable place to work.

Because of that, minimalism is about much more than just appearance. Companies spend a lot of time and money researching what customers value most, and these design changes are usually based on those findings.

So Why Do So Many People Hate Minimalism?

If you ask me, the biggest reasons are nostalgia and the feeling that brands have lost part of their identity. Many people dislike these redesigns because they feel the original personality of the brand has disappeared. There's something special about remembering places from childhood, so seeing them replaced with simple, muted colors can feel disappointing. I feel that way sometimes too.

At the same time, there has been a noticeable shift over the last year or two. Many companies realized that making everything too minimalist caused brands to look increasingly similar, so some have started bringing back elements of the personality they had lost.

It's unlikely we'll ever return to the colorful, playful restaurants that once defined brands like McDonald's. I mention McDonald's because it's one of the clearest examples, but this trend has happened almost everywhere. Even so, it seems that over the next few years we'll continue to see brands reintroduce some of their original character and move away from the sea of gray that has dominated modern design for so long.
