Nowadays, with so many generic games, it can be difficult to find something different, but there is still hope in strategy games like Deep Fringe, a turn-based tactical game set in a post-apocalyptic biopunk world. It’s pretty awesome because it combines deep strategy with destructible environments, customizable units, and a level editor that lets you create your own battles.

You can already download its demo for free on Steam, just as we did at Dragon Blogger. So today, we’ll tell you what we thought (spoiler: we loved it). If you enjoy these types of games, you can try the demo and decide for yourself whether you want to upgrade to the full version.

One thing that caught our attention from the very first moment was the pixel art design, which reminds us of classic ’90s games. The team hand-drew all the art, so everything was created entirely from scratch to provide a unique experience that will delight pixel art fans.

Diving into the gameplay, it is primarily turn-based. We control a squad of bio-enhanced agents trapped in a post-apocalyptic environment that feels like a board game. Your squad can use different strategies, and each agent has unique abilities, making it important to have a clear strategy for every move.

The map is very interactive, and you can use it to your advantage to trigger traps, break walls, burn terrain, and more. However, it can also work against you when it’s the enemy’s turn to attack. That’s why every move should be made with caution; one wrong step, and you could face a powerful attack against one or multiple units of your team.

To make each attack more effective, it’s necessary to gradually improve your units’ skills. Each one has unique abilities that allow us to create better attack strategies. Instead of focusing on one attack per unit, we can develop a stronger strategy by combining attacks from different units and prioritizing damage to eliminate the enemy.

As we advance and defeat enemies, we gradually uncover the apocalyptic story. Once again, strategy is key to progressing in the game, and, of course, the difficulty increases as we face new enemies.

Each scenario is unique, but to explore them fully, you must defeat the previous enemies, which also allows you to collect everything needed to upgrade your units’ skills and make each encounter easier.

Although we loved the game, there’s no real way to convey our feelings authentically, but what better way to experience it than by trying the 100% free demo, available for PC? Simply click here to download it from Steam.

We’re sure you’ll love the pixel art aesthetic and the strategy mechanics!
